I will be in San Diego for a conference the last weekend in October and was considering whether I want to try to get a couple dives in while there. I will only have a half day, probably Monday. I guided dive would be nice. I have no experience shore diving or in towing a float if that is the norm. My 5 mm has kept me comfortable in the mid 50s, so I hope that will be enough. I would have to rent tanks (are steel 100s available?) and possibly weights.

So, is this doable?
Thank you!
Lilla

Which half of the day?

When are you flying out?

Where in San Diego are you staying?

5 mil will work for some people, I dove one year round for decades, now I've switched to 7. We don't tow flags. Asking a Californian to plan something two months in advance is like asking a woman to be quiet; they might try to do it but it probably won't last.

It would have to be Monday morning, as I am flying out Tuesday around noon. Looking at the conference schedule Friday morning (Halloween!) might also be possible. I am staying at the Hampton Inn downtown, on Pacific Highway. I will have a rental car. Any shop recommendations that do guided dives would be great.

Thank you!

LOL truer words have not been spoken (I meant about the California planning thing, :eyebrow:).. You'd be better off re-posting this a week or so prior to your visit, that way people can make more definite plans with you...
You'll probably be better off at La Jolla Cove to get the "California in a nutshell" experience~ its shallower and you'll see quite a bit of life & kelp, so you might want to mention that as a potential dive site in your next post to find a dive buddy.

Same as SelkieDVM, I'm attending the NSC congress in LA and I want to drive down to San Diego to have my DUI dry suit finally fitted properly. I might be able to squeeze a dive or two before, around September 23thd.

Anyone has a suggestion for a guided dive?

I would have liked to ask on SoCal DIR page but it's off limit to me.

I'm more like a "NorCan" DIR myself. ;)

3rd week in October is lobster season. If you are up for a night dive, I will probably be going hunting sometime that weekend. I might be able to get a friend to take his big boat out. Water temp will be in low to mid-50's at 30ft.
