I've been asked if a colostomy is disqualifying for SCUBA. Is it an absolute contraindication? Conditional? Special considerations and/or procedures required? On first blush I'd think that if the person can swim safely with it, he/she should be able to SCUBA with it...
Thanks.

Thanks, Bob...
From what I can gather from the DAN site it's a definite maybe - anyone else out there with any first hand knowledge on the subject?
Thanks,
Rick

Since you seem to have located some of the medical info on the subject and desire first hand knowledge, you might wish to try the general discussion boards of the United Ostomy Association, Inc (appears very active)----> http://www.uoa.org/discussion/genboard0305/ & the International Ostomy Association----> http://www.ostomyinternational.org/....cgi?az=list&forum=DCForumID21&conf=DCConfID1

You can both post & search their board archives.

Best regards.

Thanks, Doc.
I'll check those out myself (I hate it when I don't have answers "in my back pocket"), and pass those sites along to the fellow who asked me.

... if anything, did these leads yield?

Best regards.

I am new to the board and saw your thread about diving with a colostomy. I have an ileostomy. Have had one for 25 years and dive; I'm 49 now, soon to be 50 but you'd never know it looking at me.

On a different health subject, my husband is just celebrating his one year anniversary from having a bone marrow transplant for cancer. He still dives too!

Don't let the small stuff stand in the way of a good time.

Best wishes.

If it were, no butthole(s) could dive safe, that's all a stoma is, just make sure you drain the bag first, at worst you'll have crap in your suit (to go along with-well, you know:) ~ zeN
