If you have the resection done as an elective procedure, there is extremely rarely any need for a colostomy. Colostomies are done in emergency procedures, because there is no opportunity ahead of time to clean out the bowel. Unprepped bowel doesn't heal to itself very well, so a colostomy is done, and then taken down later when a) the patient has recovered from the illness that caused the emergency procedure in the first place, and b) the bowel can be prepped.
Recovery from elective colon surgery is something which takes a couple of months for most people. Recovery from emergency surgery is usually longer, as the patient was ill when the procedure was done, rather than well nourished and well rested.
