Colds Suck!!! Rock on Healthy Divers!!!

Tell me about it! Over Christmas I went to Hawaii (big Island) [18 hours of travel time and 5 time zones] with my wife for a week of fun in the sun together and three days of two-tank dives for me. After my first day of diving, I came down with a cold. Having come so far, (and having schlepped all my gear), I was asking myself "is my congestion such that I should [try to] dive?" Well, it turned out that I felt like **** (and was congested), so no diving. Bummer.

Start taking ZYCAM and AIRBORNE as it's directed until your symptoms are gone. It will reduce the severity and the length of your cold! It can be taken in conjunction with cold products such as NYQUIL.

Be well!

For once - there is nothing to argue. Colds DO suck. Absolutely. They're horrible - vile - useless things and I hate them!

Well.

Except for the medical industry. Colds are big business for the medical industry.

Ah well.

Yeah we in the medical industry love it when patients show up in the ER and haven't even tried to take anything over the counter. :shakehead: Last time I checked...there is NO CURE for the common cold! But we are working on it! Dang viruses! Believe me, we would rather patients keep their cold coodies to themselves! Especially when I have a dive trip coming up! :D

I bet! ER visits are expensive and bring in the revenue. If someone takes a cold medicine and stays home, that doesn't do anything to boost ER revenue - but of course, it boosts revenue for whomever made that med.

That's correct. But people spend billions of dollars per year on meds and doctor visits. That's good for the industry's bottom line.

Believe me, we would rather patients keep their cold coodies to themselves! Especially when I have a dive trip coming up!
If it were possible to keep the sick people at home, yet still bring in the revenue - now THAT would be a cure (:

Colds both sucks and blows at the same time.. Thats why you end up having a vacuum in your head :p

Most people who have to pay for their insurance, usually try to take care of themselves or go to the family doctor to take care of their problems. The ones we see who abuse the ER as a clinic are the one's who spend the taxpayers money.

But, hey, it's great to live in a country where top medicine is there for you! Lots of meds that used to be prescription are now available to everyone. Hey I do appreciate having a job taking care of sick people, but there sure are alot of people who think that the ER has some kind of overnight miracle cure for them. Heck we all have to suffer with illness... but there's alot of great meds out there to help alleviate those illnesses and we are all not evil for providing that for the public.

Actually a hospital makes more money from low census than if our hospital or ER is full. The ER is expensive, but it's a service you pay for if you want a physican 24/7.

Be well and dive happy!

AMEN! I've got some sort of throat/ear thing going on and am going to the doc today to make sure it isn't anything serious and is just drainage from this screwed up weather we're having. I feel fine but this throat and ear thing just comes and goes. I hope it's nothing and will just go away after this weather front that's moving in today passes because I'm leaving for Belize in 11 DAYS! I CAN'T BE SICK ON MY FIRST TRIP TO BELIZE!!! Not only have I never been to Belize...I've never been diving in the ocean AND I have a BRAND NEW REGULATOR that is just crying to get wet!:D

I would recommend immune boosters like echinacea and vitamin C daily. It's part of my morning vitamin ritual. The Zycam really will work, especially if taken as soon as you feel a little congested or a wake up with a sore throat. Now if you start running a fever, or your congestion goes from clear to yellow/green, then you have a bateria on board that needs more aggressive treatment than just OTC meds can provide. A great OTC med for congestion is Mucinex. It used to be a prescription med and will break up chest/head congestion really well. Whenever I have a dive trip coming up, I start taking the Airborne to give my body a little extra boost to ward off the cold coodies! Definitely take the Airborne if you are flying. That is the easiest place to get a cold. The most simple thing to remember is to wash your hands before eating or coming in contact with your mouth and eyes. Hand sanitizer is always in my gear or on board with me when I travel.
