The delta 3 is available with several different first stages. If it has the sealed diaphragm first stage (CDX5 and another one I can't remember) it is fine for cold water. There is also a piston first stage (SP3 I think) that is not sealed and not recomended for cold water. A friend of mine has one of these on his delta2 and has used it in high 30s water without a problem. He is careful not to breath it on the surface though, and not play with the purge.

So...depends on what first stage you have.

I will have to check, but I think I have the CDX5.

Both the diaphragms, the CDX and the DX4 are environmentally sealed. Although the design is not as effective as a apeks style, it works for cold water.

I use a Delta 3/DX 4 reg in cold water and ice diving and never had a freeflow, no problems with breathing effort or anything. IMO its an excellent reg.
