Someone around here has a signature to the effect of real divers preferring cold water, bad vis and deep wrecks, so I'll probably never be a real diver :).

I hate (and have always hated) being cold for recreational purposes. Grew up in northern Canada, never learned to play hockey (or even to skate well) because 🥶. Lived for many years as an adult in Calgary, Alberta - an hour or so away from world class ski slopes - and never took up skiing because 🥶.

So now that you know I've been a wimp when it comes to cold from my youth up, my vote of "only +28C" is probably no surprise...

I'm down for warm or "temperate" (down to 10C/50° F). I'll begrudgingly do down to 5C/40s F. Even that is rather "bracing" on the face. Below that is a whole new level. I have huge respect for the divers going out in the really cold water and/or cold+windy topside.

I started freediving in Northern California cold water (50 degrees -9-10 C) as an abalone diver.
Got certified later in the same area so continued with scuba in the same locations.
Went to Queensland Australia once and Hawaii 25 years ago and that's about it for my warm water diving. All my diving now is local cold water and I absolutely love it. There just seems to be so much life. I'm also an avid hunter/gatherer and we are freely allowed to hunt here.
I dive wetsuits only, fast sleek agile.
I don't care for the hassle maintenance and costs of drysuits.

Last two month mainly diving under ice, last open water in the end of December. Temperatures on surface 0.5 C - 2 C. From 3 meters getting little warmer 3C and on bottom deep 4 C.
Also in summers deeper than 20 meters water is always 4-7 C and thermocline is about 5 meters.
Diving under the ice is next level! Doubt we'll ever do that, but we've said 'never' before...

I do not think the "poll" is legitimate, certainly not the "results".

The thread does not invite a cross-section of SB users. Because of the title "Cold water diving - we enjoy LOVE it!" it only draws in users with an oddly perverted, un-natural attitude towards cold water to start with. :poke:

The only reason I clicked was to see if it was like some 12-step recovery thing ...

I agree the title needs work.
It should read "Cold Water Diving - We LOVE it!"
Cold water is refreshing, invigorating, stimulating, healthy, highly recommended!
