Are there any suggestions for another nice diver hangout to have a beer without tripping over puking, falling down college kids?

This is a good question: I have heard of the ones on the other side of the Island and of the Havana Club...any others? We intend to spend most afternoons with a cold beverage doing not much of anything!

Well, there is an upstairs place over the shop on the corner of Calle 5 Sur and Melgar (the main drag) where you can get a good view of the harbor and sunset. I think that a bar has also moved into the old Carlos n' Charlie's spot upstairs a couple of blocks north of Palmeras restaurant. And there's the new location of Joe's Reggae Bar between Palmeras and Hard Rock Cafe; I've not been in, but Joe's in their old location was a pretty cool place.

A couple of other places with bands are the old Morgan's location on the northeast corner of the square and the seaside courtyard behind Acuario.

There is a way to get to the other side and see what everyone is talking about without renting a car/scooter. You can negotiate with a cabbie and rent him and his car by the hour. The total cost can be about the same as a rental car and you don't have to designate a driver. Check it out with any of the cabbies (hopefully a day or two before you are going so you have some room to negotiate)

Of course, the other side of that is that if you are drinking so much that you are a menace driving, then you're probably missing a good bit of your vacation, and a hangover on expensive vacation time is my idea of hell on earth. Moderation in all things... ;^)

Moderation is good, but I have a quite strict policy on drinking and driving. I don't. And I don't get in cars with people who do. Alcohol can be a funny a thing and I'd hate to wind up dead coz someone "only had one or two". Too many friends doing the eternal slumber coz someone was OK to drive or "I swear they only had a couple drinks all night."

It might not be your driver that causes it, but alcohol can slow down reaction times, even a little alcohol, and it might be the other idiot that your driver needs to react to. YMMV and Each to Their Own.

The hiring a cabbie might be a good way to do it. Or we might just have one early one and then sit and eat for the next four hours ;)

Where is Havana Club?
Thanks
It's north of the main square by about 3 blocks. I can't remember exactly but you actually have to walk through a jewlery store on the lower level to get upstairs to the club. It's on the main north/south drag along the water.

The owner makes regular trips to Cuba to come back with the cigars and rum.

FWIW, I drove around Cozumel in a rental car last week (Wed July 21), and stopped at Coconuts for lunch. The only tables with a view of the ocean were outdoors, and some had no umbrellas. Not a lot of "beach" right there, more like a cliff. Rough surf and rocks. It was a long drive, not one I would do at night after any drinks.

Note that there are a couple places with rooms over on that side of the island if you really must visit Coconuts. (I won't bother again unless I am assured of more activity than we saw!)

We stopped for a drink at Playa Palancar (no entrance fee) some distance south of town on the protected side of town (a couple of Christi's boats were having a Surface Interval there). It was a great view, beautiful sandy beach, inviting water. There was a full restaurant and bar right there. Seemed like a great place to hang out. Some others (Corona? Playa Sol?) charge admission and are pretty expensive.

Also check the turtle nesting schedule. We were stopped at Mescalito's one night because the turtles were coming ashore to nest and we were not allowed out on the beach. Bribes didn't even work because some Biologists were there, and eventually the Policia showed up (long story). We were told that the people staying at the hotel just down the road were not allowed out on the beach at night. That might be over in 33 days, but just one more thing to consider.

Of course I am becoming a Curmudgeon. I go to Cozumel to dive. I can drink to excess here at home.
