I'm a Fish!
We are getting excited about our upcoming trip to Coz! Only 37 more days!!

As we are talking about what we want to do, we are wondering how we are going to work going to the other side of the island & stopping at Coconuts etc. We all will want to enjoy a nice cold beverage ;)

Is there any way to get over there and back without renting a car? We will want to do that, too, but are thinking that maybe it would be nice for an afternoon/evening to just head over for food and drink?

Or is there somewhere more convinient to watch the ocean & people while just doing nothing?

Coconuts closes @ 5pm. They don't have electricty there. They used to stay open on full moon nights but stopped that because too many patrons full of margarettas were getting stopped on their way back.

You can take a taxi over, my guess would be about 25.00US one way from town.

How would you get bacK? I don't think there are any phones over there, so unless you had the cab wait, I don't know how you could get a cab back to town.

The best idea IMO is to rent a car and make a day of it. There are other places over there worth visiting, e.g., Mescalito's, Punta Morena, Chen Rio, Playa Bonita, El Mirador, Bob's Marley Bar.

I do not recommend renting scooters instead, unless you all are experienced at driving them, and especially if you are planning on having a couple of adult beverages along the way.

BTW, I highly recommend the whole fried snapper at Chen Rio.

If you want convience instead of crossing the island, one spot I like is the Havana Club. They have a little balcony where you can watch the port and the people below and an unlimited supply of quality Cuban cigars and rum :).

Yea, there is no other way to get to Coconuts other than by car or taxi as far as I know, there are taxi's that drive around the island to pick folks up but there is no real schedule. I sure the cab fare would be pretty high also.
There are quite a few restaurants and bars in San Miguel along the shoreline "main street" that goes through town, Carlos'n'Charlies is always good people watching, and there are a few small sidewalk bars on the square or "plaza" in town.
It is kind of the drop-off place for people getting out of cabs and heading out to eat or shop so there's good peeps watching there also. actually. there doesn't ever seem to be a shortage people watching anywhere down there.
42 days to go here! all equipments checked and we're ready to get wet!!

In the past few years, the establishments along the waterfront drive have largely gone over to catering to the cruise ship crowd; I especially recommend against Carlos n' Charlie's and the rest of the Punta Langosta complex unless it's a little piece of Cancun you are looking for. Cn'C's used to be a funky little upstairs bar with a lot of atmosphere, but their new place resembles a mall bar with inflated drink prices.

OK...that's about what we thought.

And you'd have to knock on us the heads and drag our unconscious bodies down the street before we'd go to a Carlos and Charlies, Planet Hollywood or other American-college student type bar!

Guess we'll have to play rock, paper, scissors to designate a driver ;)

I very much agree with ggunn. On several cruise ship "one day" Cozumel visits over the years, we never missed the old "upstairs" Carlos and Charlies. Now it's just like he said, and after going in one night last May during a week long dive trip, it was all 10 of us could do to get out. Are there any suggestions for another nice diver hangout to have a beer without tripping over puking, falling down college kids? I must be getting old. I used to love that place when it was upstairs down the road. Maybe I'm a hypocrite!

When it was upstairs past the plaza back in the 70's and 80's we would go there for the ribs and afew beers there were no puking college kids :l: there just a bunch of divers. It was great back then. I haven't been in there since 1993 and that what the last time. It had turned into a party til you pass out place. :flush:
