I was recently discussing the possibility of doing a week at Coco View Resort in Roatan. Another diver told me that there had recently been several issues at Coco View including:
a) Divers suffering from bad air and even dying as a result; and
b) food poisoning.
I follow this site regularly and have not hear of such things in the last year (or ever). Is there any basis for these assertions?

Yes, but as all things the story is long and blame is hard to pin down! I would say it can happen and I think they have done what is possible to improve the problems! There are other choices on the island, but wouldn't let past problems be the deciding factor! ;)

Facts: The story isn't all that long, and the blame was pretty easy to pin down. The stories got very magnified by people who simply had no facts. They are reapeated or not refuted by those who indeed know better. The internet echoes forever.

In the case of food poisoning- altho CCV was blamed for it, there was an island wide problem that affected all resorts. CCV alone isolated and resolved that problem which came from a Honduran Government Approved Cheese Factory.

The bad air in question simply was not produced at CCV, although it was unfortunately used there. When a resort's compressors are down, they often have their tanks filled by other resorts. "Borrowed" air is now subjected to the same tests that CCV utilizes on its own production process~ which they had previously incorrectly assumed that all providers utilized.

It occurred few years back, when several people on the internet kept up the niggling and innuendo. This food poisoning story was bolstered by one particular dive newsletter which sold a lot of subscriptions while grinding away at a misleading story, printing material they knew to be wrong... and never a retraction. They once again love the place.

In terms of the air issue, the other details of the story were sealed by court agreement, much to the vexation and chagrin of some of those not intimately involved. I understand the legal system, I accept the conditions it places on my perceived needs. I also know that CCV's air is as good as any compressor can make it.

It's mostly booked-up solid anyway, so public perception seems to have caught up with reality.

I spent a week diving at Cocoview earlier this month, and can say their compressor/fill setup is as good as any I have ever seen, clean, well organized, and apparently well ran. As to the food it was all served buffet style, lunch and dinner were great everyday although with limited selection some of the time, breakfast was ok, but a bit repetitive, mostly bacon and eggs with some side (toast, waffle, etc).

Has a very big following on this board, however I personally would not go again.

I think you missed one also. Shortly after the bad air incident there was another incident where a diver had a mishap with the dive boats prop. I don't know the outcome of that incident Re fault.
However as I said CCV has always had a big following on this board.

I have nothing more to add to what others have said....

I have been going to CoCo View since the 80's...I have a trip planned there for the last week in June 09...and will continue to go there until I am too old to dive....:blinking:
