Hello all,

My Question, Is the first Gen Cobalt $900 new from the Dive Shop worth it or spend the extra $300 for the Second Gen?

I am new to Diving, presently have 22 dives under me, in 6 months. I have been diving with a Zoop Wrist and Console version. Also tried a Oceanic. I choose these because of the Large Screen Numbers. Sadly, I still just do not see the numbers well underwater. For the Zoop, maybe because the green glow almost never turns on. My Son also uses the Zoop and he sees his fine. Maybe its just my old eyes. :)

I am told by is friends that the Cobalt is very easy to see. But is the v1 worth it, or does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks All,

Hi,

I think you should go for the Cobalt 2. Faster processor, faster and accurate compass, more mixes (not that this matters right now) and some nice updates on how this new cobalt works cfr, firmware updates.

I would spend the extra, but I doubt the difference is 300$. Here in Belgium the cobalt 1 sells for about 990euro and the cobalt 2 for about 1059euro.

I would go for the cobalt 2

It's hard to say what $300 is worth to you, but...

If you will use the compass, definitely go for the Cobalt 2. It's night and day difference.

Both are bright and easy to see, with about the same battery life. The C-2 is faster and has additional features. It is much easier to upgrade the firmware on.

in post # 11 in this thread I describe some of the changes in the Cobalt 2. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/atomic-aquatics/474086-cobalt-2-a.html

Thank you Both for your Opinions. Luckily I have a few weeks to think this all over, as we wrap up the school year.

So I took the Jump and purchased an Cobalt 2. This Computer has a really great screen, and I have no issues seeing it under water.

RonR, I have a question. I am still learning the computers but, Can you preplan multiple way points in the compass? Using the ZionTrain Dive in Florida. You drop off and head down at say, 180 degrees for the first wreck, then the 2nd wreck may be at 140 degrees and the 3rd 165? If not, is this something that could be added?

Thanks

Micheal

I dont think this can be done at the moment. Its a great idea to add this feature.

Right now the only way to preplan is to carry the bearings in your head, or on a slate, and set them at the appropriate point in the dive. The Cobalt has automatic bearing markers that can be enabled for 180° (this one is always there), 90°, or 120° patterns, but right now we don't have a way to pre-enter a series of arbitrary headings.

It's certainly worth looking at, though. We have plans to enhance the dive profile planning and monitoring in the future, to enable waypoints in a dive that could be monitored in relation to a plan. This would fit in with that general idea.

Hope you enjoy your Cobalt.
