Hi Everyone,

As you can see from my previous threads i have purchased a new light-for-me canister light.

When i was playing around configuring the light head (UTD way) it got me thinking about clipping multiple things to the right shoulder D Ring. Light head, back up light, long hose etc and i was wondering which order is best to attach which things? I am interested if there is a DIR way to do this? I am always interested in the DIR ways and there reasons.

Please could you tell me the recommended way? (if there is one!) or how you do it and why?

Thanks
Daniel Dilley

Sometimes the best way to test these things is to dive and find a way that is most comfortable to you. Clipping multiple things to a D-Ring has never been an issue for me even with gloves on.

Just clip it off and carry on with life.

I teach that there is no 'standard', but whatever protocol you use, make it a personal standard and stick with it. In respect to 'protocol', I mean whether you clip a bolt-snap for a given item facing inwards or outwards, the order in which you clip them and using different sizes of boltsnap.

This develops muscle memory and allows you to differentiate items by feel and position on the D-ring.

just attach and go. I prefer to always clip things "down" so the bolt is facing in, but that's just because it's easier to get on and off. As far as order of things going on, just clip them in whatever order you're putting them on. You should always start at the object and move towards the bolt to make sure you have the right one when you remove it which is pretty easy

It's best *not* to clip anything through another bolt snap. :) Surprisingly easy to do, surprisingly difficult to undo. I clip my backup light gate "in" and every thing else gate out. The motion is up, under the dring and out, holding the gate open with my thumb.

Many newer diver assume that it will be difficult to differentiate between your back up light, primary light head, primary reg, scooter etc. if they are all clipped to the same dring. In practice it's no more difficult than reaching into your pocket and selecting your car key from the other keys on your keyring by feel alone. It just requires a few 100 attempts. :)
