I just bought an Atomic Z2, and I'd like to know the proper way to clean it. I've read various stories (on here and otherwise) about not dunking atomic regs because of the seat-saving technology that could let water in. However, the owner of the LDS I bought it from (who rents Atomic regs and claims to use one himself) said not to worry about that and there's no problem dunking or soaking it. So, how should I clean it? (since I assume it should be cleaned in some manner)

When cleaning our B2's, I usually just dunk-and-swish one stage at a time (e.g. dunk the 1st stage and swish it around, keeping the 2nd's out of the water, then dunk the 2nd's (primary and octo) the same way.) Then they get hung up or coiled in a shelf to dry.

You bring up a good point with the orifice in the second stage. It will not keep out water if you soak the secnond stage, and you could get water into the LP side of the first stage. There are two ways to eliminate this problem and one way to get rid of the water in the first stage if it gets in there: 1. Soak the second stage by itself while the reg is pressurized. That way the orifice seals and no water gets in the hose. 2. Keep the unpressurized first stage elevated higher than the second stage. Water has a hard time migrating uphill. Just make sure you drain any water in the LP hose out before you put the two stages at the same level. 3. If you've soaked the whole reg while unpressurized, just pressurize it and purge it hard for about ten cycles--that'll get the water out of the first stage and out of the reg.

Hope this helps. It is always a good idea to soak your reg in fresh water after diving it in salt water. I soak mine for 24 hours after a week in the Caribbean or a weekend off Hatteras.

I use an M1 but I never soak ANY reg un-pressurized. I have a 19cuft pony I put my regs on and soak in the bathtub for a while. This gets the 1st stage rinsed too.

Remember a quick rinse right after your dive (while still pressurized) is better than letting the reg dry and soaking it later.
