900 mins any time....all weekends free....free roaming....and european access when i travel overseas....all for $65 a month

Yeah, my wife and I got one of those family thingsys....

we share 800 minutes...no LD, no Roaming....Unlimited weekends, Unlimited mobile to mobile, International access (for all the diving I dream about 1 day)....all for 69.99 a month + 2 free color phones...it was an easy decision really.

I agree - Cingular's customer service, and even worse, their billing is extremely bug-ridden and flawed. You need to read every single line item on the bill every month to make sure that something didn't get "accidentally" worked in there.

I once ended up with an $1800 phone bill. The reason was this - I have a national calling plan which means for $140 a month I can use 2000 day time minutes just about anywhere in the country that my phone indicates by having the "Cingular D" diaplayed on the screen before dialing. Well - I was making these calls while away on business... they turned around and said I was out of network. BullSh*t!

I complained and had complained until they finanlly capitualated - after almost six months. This wasn't the first major problem I had with them. I seriously suggest that anyone looking for a cell phone company look elsewhere.

Apparently after Nov 24th you will be able to change companies without changing your number. I have been hanging in with cingular because of the number change hassle (business phone) but, as soon as I can move the number I'm out!

I looked at Tmobile's offers and they seem OK but it is all horribly confusing and time consuming. Is there a website somewhere that compares all the companies?

Grajan, are you sure about the number portablity (sp?) taking effect on 11/24? Reason I ask is that I'm in the Wireless Business and heard many times that the FCC has already thrown it out, yet it keeps coming back for votes on every new session. I hope one day they can get it together and get it passed as that will be great!!

Everyone else, I know what you mean about Cingular, I used to have them before I switched over to Sprint believe me not that much better on service or connectivity, but one thing I have learned from this business is if you have connectivity problems and a older phone is call your provider and see what kind of free software upgrades you can get to help you out, this will help keep your bills a little lower and help with dropped calls, etc.

In regards to what your being charged, keep a close eye on your bill each month and always check your call detail online if possible, you may at times find that your being charged for something you shouldn't be and can get it corrected right away.. also be very careful about contracts with discounts... be sure to read the small print on all of it other than thinking hey this is a great deal and just sign up and have regrets later...

Rebates are a bad idea.

Just say no.

Then they will offer you a better alternative, usually.

Shake yourself. Rebates are a great thing.

The rebate administration of some companies may blow, but for manufacturers and for savvy consumers, rebates rule.

Its part of my biz - so I see both sides. Manufacturers live on the breakage (non-redemption...as redemption for most consumer products is less than 25%)...they are essential in many industries (automotive, consumer electronics, computer, etc...) Ever leveraged an auto rebate to add some big $ to your down payment on a car?

I could go on and on about the tons of cash I save every year by leveraging manufacturer rebate programs. Its simple - cut out the UPC, send it in with your reciept, save copies and watch the mail. Its free money. What's the problem? Will I cut a box and lick a stamp for $15? For $30? For $200? In a minute! For less than $5.00 you're dreaming. But for most rebates in the $10 - $200 range, you bet.

Avoiding them? I don't get it. I look for them - and with all points about equal, rebates drive my purchase decision.

Amazon is amazing with this - especially over the holidays. Since they've dropped their free shipping limit from $50 to $25 on most electronics, they also offer rebates on networking, PC and most name-brand electronics. No tax, free freight, rebate? Why start the car to shop?

Rebates rule.

So anyway, check your bill and keep a copy of the bar code. I'd rather spend the money on diving...

Good advice for ANY mail-in rebates you do.

This is the reason I dislike mail-ins. I probably have to resubmit about one in four rebates - all to the same redemption company in Minnesota who seem to handle everyone's rebates.

I'm actually surprised they notified you there was a problem - usually I have to do the follow up.

Hey for those who are curious about the switching of phones and keeping their same number be sure to check out this article first.

Portability near for wireless set

In regards to rebates, they can be a good thing if it not connected to a contract or agreement of sorts.. in some cases rebates are connected this way on Wireless Services such as Cell Phones..

Wow, sounds like a day at work for me...no, I don't work for Cingular, but I am used to hearing complaints from customers regarding the service they have with other carriers...and some from my own as well.

Some good seemingly unbiased resources that I can suggest to anyone researching signing up for a service would be "phonescoop.com" and Consumer Reports does a review at least once a year as a general rule (Feb in 2003). Other than that it seems that many newspapers perform reviews periodically. The NY Times has been doing quite a few recently.

Hope that helps.
