You might want to post on www.cozumelmycozumel.com The site is run by someone who lives on Cozumel and is very knowledgable. There are also lots of members there who live on the island full time or part time. They may be able to steer you in the right direction. www.travelnotes.cc might also be able to help. Lots of non-diving Coz regulars on the board there.

Hope you find someone. There has to be babysitters in Cozumel who have experience taking care of visitor's kids. I can't imagine that everyone who comes with small children have then in tow 24/7.

I have been trying to keep my mouth shut on this one because I am very opinionated. I traveled all over when my kids were babies and my rule is "always pick your sitter, never let them pick you" If someone has put themselves on a list, wanting to babysit, that was not an option. I would meet a maid at the hotel, converse, use my radar and line her or her sister up. Once you work off a list of people "picking you" the odds for a bad person go way up in my view. I had full timeMexican nannies for 13 years and never had one bad thing happen, nor one dollar taken. they are wonderful with kids in general and very honest and hard working. I just think you should trust your instincts and pick your babysitter. Mothers sometimes forget to use their radar and their instincts.

I had mexican nannies too, but they came to live at our house - I loved all of them.

But, baby kidnapping, especially white babies, are now epidemic in Mexico and further South. Guess where they go? Right back to the US in illegal adoptions. Shakes me to my core.

Daniel,
Do you have any links to stories from reputable news sources or state dept. warnings about these kidnappings? I'd really like to know if this is a real problem.

concerned grandpa,

Look, leaving your child with strangers ANYWHERE is always problematic, but there are special considerations that one really has to consider in Mexico - I know, I live here. Kidnapping for ransom is epidemic; and baby kidnapping for illegal adoption is a ruthless thing to deal with.

The first two links are to stories about mexican children from impoverished single mothers being abducted for north american adoptions. Serious, tragic and reprehensible, but they are not warnings about crimes against "white babies". The third article concerns kidnap for ransom, all the cases cited were against mexicans and most were short term grabs for quick profit.
I don't think it does any good to rumor monger and spread fear without specific cause.

Fine. Forget I said anything.

No, you live in Mexico and yet hold it up as the babysnatching center. If there is validity to your arguments, we want to hear it. I've been to Cozumel a number of times and major crime seems to be as non-existant there as it is in any small US town. If you have legit concerns, we all want to know about it. If this baby selling business is as prolific as you make it out, I certainly want to know. How have the hotels managed to cover it up for so long?

If there is a real issue I definatly want to know, please educate us...if this is just a perpetuated myth, then please stop defaming Mexicans.

Would I leave my child in the hands of a hotel supplied babysitter in Mexico City or TJ? No, but then again I wouldn't do it in North St. Louis either. All countries, states, large cities have a bad side...if the little town of San Miguel has one I'm keen to know about it...

Well I have to admit that I'd be really cagey about leaving my kids with someone I didn't know. Although I've also heard stories about high levels of kidnappings in Mexico (and other places), I should imagine if any tourist babies/toddlers had been snatched then it would have been huge on the news. That's just my opinion though. Personally I would check that any baby sitter service was bona-fida before I used it no matter where I was going. I can't imagine that there would be much to worry about if it was connected to a large well-established hotel though.
The last time I took my very young kids with me overseas we took a babysitter with us - well, she was my father in-laws girl friend and he came too! :D That was to Honolulu!:D
I'm not sure that Daniel is meaning to put anyone down, maybe just saying that it pays to be careful with your kids....which we can probably all agree with.

Bob (Sorry)

The youngest children that we have seen and the ones that we are referring to have been five, six, and seven!

We can understand your concern with a one year old!

Our great granddaughter is three and I know would fit in if she got to know the individual and group of children first. However, she would still require some nap time in the afternoon. We do not know how that would be accomplished.

Why don't you call the Occidental Allegro to see if you can get some info?

Their number is 011-52-987-872-9770

Also try this email address to possibly help you find out more information.

reservasoac@mx.occidentalhotels.com

I am sure that they could apprise you of some your options!

We used both of these contacts when we were trying to find out where we would end up because of "Wilma".

Hope you are successful....

Still diving at 70...

Mike
