Welcome to the board! I just (June) got certified and it's my new favorite thing to do. You get used to the cold. With a good wetsuit, you don't even notice it. ;) Hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us (or at least as much as I do). :)

Wow, ok, so 7mm gloves are a no deal, then I suppose. I'm just worried about being cold...

As to the hood, I have a couple coming by mail that i'll try on. Just so I know, what should I expect in fitting the neck? I assume they will all be a little loose to some extent to allow to get them on. How much fabric should gather in the neck if I pinch it? I would love to have a custom hood, but $85 seems a bit much unless you can't find an off-the-shelf that fits, yeah?

Man, this gets expensive quick. I do have to conserve a bit (student w/o rich parents), but I want to be warm, too. I need to know where I can save, and where I have to put the $$ down.

Also, how much will is cost to get a good easy-breathing reliable reg? Am I better off renting for a while?

Thanks,
Angela

Sarita, i'm really looking forward to meeting up with you all, too. I'll be certified for December:)

Zen, thanks for the link... i'm checking it out.

Yay!! By that time in December, we'll all have a fun Christmas dive!!! ;)

Haha!!! You'll never get me to take chemistry again!! Never ever again!!! hahah!!!!

Aww...:( Only 1.5 hours left before I gotta stop my silly spree day. Oh well, at least it was fun while it lasted :)

Welcome to norcal diving Angela. Given that you're a fellow golden bear, I suggest checking out Steele's Scuba on Telegraph. They're really knowledgeable and helpful.

As for the gloves, here's a tip I got from Steele's: Gauntlet style gloves that aren't too tight tucked under your wetsuit sleeves will do a great job of keeping your hands warm.

Also, depending on how well the farmer john/jane fits (or doesn't fit), you could consider a 7mm jumpsuit with a 7mm torso warmer.

On a side note, how did you get in touch with Jim?! I've been playing phone tag with him for weeks!

Angela,

I wear Deep See 5mm gloves and they are great. I've only felt my fingers get a little numb after diving my third dive when the water temp was around 46-47 degrees on each dive. 7mm will limit your finger movement and as long as you have a good fitting wetsuit and hood, you should be just fine. Personally, my boot are 5mm as well(O'niell Titaniums) and my feet have always been toasty! Just make sure you get items that fit snug yet comfortable, which it sounds like you are.

Yes, it is expensive initially purchasing your own equipment. But once you have all your gear, it's basically car gas, tank rental and air. Most people will tell you to rent regs for a while and find out what you like. My experience was I never really got to test regs(except for some friends') and the regs I got from rental were beat up and breathed wet. But I rented while I did research on them. Remember, you will need at minimum on the regulator, Your primary(first and second stage), an octo and an analog SPG and depth gauge. You could hold off on a computer to save some money for now and dive tables which you should learn in OW class(depending on the course now so I've heard;)). There are usually deals going on quite often where they will throw an octo in with the purchase of a regulator. I would say for those items, you would be looking at $400-500 for an inexpensive setup and going up from there. You may actually be able to find something cheaper, but I kind of doubt it after all is said and done.
Anyway, it's late and I'm verbally vomiting and I sure hope that made sense!:blinking:

Good luck finding a hood that fits you well. Sounds like you are doing it right and trying to find proper fit.

I was wondering what you were taking, Roy. :)

Oh I didn't take anything. Scary isn't it? You don't know when or how I would go crazy. ;)
