I've noticed some locations charge considerably less when filling doubles. It was like getting the 2nd tank at 1/2 price. It makes sense since it requires less hands on time, just more compressor work. Is this sort of pricing common?

I've never seen it.

The only places I've seen that might qualify are those that charge per CF of gas delivered. Since doubles are usually used on dives where gas reserves result in there being a third or more of the gas left in the tanks, as opposed to singles that are typically in the 500 psi range, you'll be putting less gas in each tank when filling doubles. For example, the typical set of double 80's would be getting about 100 CF for a fill while the typical single would be getting about 65 CF... so, the price of the doubles fill would be about 1.5 times the cost of a single... which is just what you described.

I don't have doubles, but dove with some dive club buddies that do at a site that charges a flat rate for fills. Single, doubles, doesn't matter -- they're all $5. (Mine tanks are O2 clean so I won't get a fill there, but for plain Air you can't beat the price.)
