Why piston is not good for cold water?

The diaphragm seals most of the parts, so they're NEVER in contact with water.

In a balanced piston reg, most of the moving parts ARE in contact with water: the lower side of the crown/head, the stem, the spring; so the risk of icing is much greater.

What was the coldest you guys have taken it? As well what would you recommend for an Octo?

Care to share why you passed on the HOD D1 and kept the Apeks??

Sure

I own 7 reg sets and they're all Apeks... FSTs, FSR, DSTs, Tek3s. Most of my tech buddies also use Apeks, so it makes sense from a spare parts and swapping point of view

I bought the HOG D1 cold and 2 HOG second stages for three reasons: some knowledgable divers here liked them, I liked the philosophy of the HOG guys, and they were cheap (black friday special) - so I decided to get a set and try them out

I liked them just fine, albeit the second stages are heavier than my ATX/XTXs - then my local buddy needed a reg set for some dives, so I loaned them to him. He liked them and needed them more than I did, so the loan turned into a sale

So far he only does recreational diving and I do some deep tech dives, so I'm happy with a reg that has been proven over time while also being comfortable that my buddy has solid equipment for his needs

Not to say that the HOG regs won't do the more challenging dives, I just know the Apeks will

Looking to pick up my 1st reg and looking for recommendations for a cheap cold water regulator. I want to try ice diving next winter too, so something that can go with that would be great. I'm reading that the Zeagle Envoy is good for that? Any others?

If you're getting into diving to save money, you might want to re-think the whole idea.

:shocked2:

I agree on the philosophy part - that was a big part of my decision! Price is very attractive and feedback here on SB seems very positive.

How much heavier we talking?? Significant? I just realised I haven't seen weight of either the 1st or 2nd stages listed anywhere! Chris????

Hopefully should have mine next week and can't wait to dive them..........

I have a sherwood Blizzard and a sherwood Brut. They Have served me well since i bought the brut in 1998. I have used them both in warm and cold water (down to 34f). They are both excellent for cold water. The 1st stages are identical in operation. Sherwood uses a dry air bleed system to keep all water and dirt out of the first stage. I have never had a freeflow on either of them. They have been down to 150' in 40F water and functioned flawlessly. The sherwood is not the best breather, but due to it's ease of service and reliability, it is commonly the standard for rental gear. It is also lower on the price scale.

From what I have seen, the only difference (inside and out) between the two models is the blizzard has a heat sync in the second stage.
