LOL! I have to agree with you there. ;)

Thanks to Leejnd and everyone else for the assist. I think we are leaning toward the Spectre, but I have to check in with the other people on the trip. If we decide to book I'll let you know!

Mike

As others have pointed out, it all depends on which group of the eight islands you want to dive. Catalina is probably the easiest island to dive either from a mainland dive boat or by coming over here either on a day trip or for a few days. Of course I'm a bit partial to it since it has been home for 42 years! The northern islands vary in factors such as warmth, visibility and currents. Anacapa in the east is the warmest with San Miguel on the western end coldest and sometimes difficult to reach. When I'm diving up there I use either the Truth Aquatics or Peace dive boats. So many operators down here in the southern region that I won't make any specific recommendations.

Look at the dive boat schedules on the California Diving News web site for specific destinations and dates.

Truth Aqautics boats are great. Given my personal exerience with Spectre, I would avoid it.

That's kind of an ominous and nebulous warning - care to share your personal experience? I usually make of point of not warning someone away from an operation without at least telling them why. Perhaps whatever your problem with them was, wouldn't apply to these divers. Or perhaps it was a one-off situation. Every dive op has a bad day.

Having been on the Spectre several times myself (as well as numerous other local dive boats), I find them to be a first-class operation. So without details, I find your warning to be unhelpful...at best.

The only bad thing I can think of about the Spectre is they do 4 dives instead of the normal 3. It makes for a full day and if that doesn't knacker you, the hot tub on the return to the dock will.

LOL! I agree. Although there is that nasty coffee... ;)

OH, and let's not forget that loooong giant stride! That is the only dive boat I've been on where jumping in the water felt like an E-ticket.

First of all, you must decide on which Channel Islands to dive at.

In the San Diego area, there's San Clemente.

In the Los Angeles/Long Beach area, there are Catalina, Santa Barbara and San Nicholas.

In the Oxnard/Ventura area, there are Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel.

Thanks everyone. We are booked on the Spectre for Saturday and Sunday. LeeAnne, looking forward to meeting you then!

Mike

Great! I just booked Saturday myself, so I'll be onboard all weekend. I'm boarding on Friday night. (I don't live that far, I just don't like getting up early in the morning so boarding the night before means I get to sleep in!) ;)
