I was with Brian on the Sand Dollar. It was a very good time. He's right that we were just there to dive and the diving was, overall, pretty good.

What I did not like was the Sand Dollar's policy of the trip sponsor providing their own safety diver/divemaster, and the fact this was not communicated to the trip organizer. The co-captain stated it was the divers' responsibility to check in and out of the boat for dives. Crew provided minimal assistance with divers getting into the water, and little to no assistance for divers re-boarding the boat. The co-captain spent most of the weekend solo diving. At one point I was standing on the stern for a couple hours checking divers in/out, helping with fins, etc, and was concerned with the lack of crew presence. At one point the captain was the last one in the water and I got a little worried about him until I found his bubbles and saw him completing a safety stop.

It bothered me that the boat did not deploy the chase boat or current line on the second and third day until it was almost too late. The current picked up and a couple teams surfaced away from the boat. I wasn't there, but apparently when one diver asked for the current line and complained that it could have been tossed closer to him, the crew was overheard making rude and profane statments about that diver. One of our divers swam the current line out closer to the tired divers. Venting in the absence of customers is one thing, but their actions were unprofessional.

The physical boat was rustic, which was OK. We were a group of 11 divers. The boat felt full with that many divers. I believe their usual load is twice that which would have made me very uncomfortable. The galley is small. We were stepping over each other at times as it was.

I very much enjoyed the Vision last year. The captain was a younger guy. I found the crew to be very professional. The boat itself is large and comfortable. I understand that Truth aquatics allows groups to bring their own O2 and mix their own nitrox. We're looking into other options, including the Vision, for next year's trip. The group may decide to return to Sand Dollar. We did have a good time. For me, though, lack of dive safety staff was cause for concern.

The only other boat I've used down there was the Encore. That was about 10 years ago. I found it to be pretty crowded but had a great time nonetheless. No idea what they're like today.

Don't look to the Vision for safety. We laughed at how they totally ignored us. Not once with they see any of us give an "ok" sign let alone return it.

No O2 on the Vision.

Al. did you ever get a reply from Truth Aquatics? I have been on every boat, TRUTH, CONCEPTION, and VISION and always enjoyed the great diving and the good crews.
I do hope that you will have a decent reply to your concerns.

Sadly no, truth aquatics didn't bother to respond to me or to the letter sent by the shop. We won't subject our customers to another trip like that one so we're moving on.

Al, That is sad to know that you never even had Truth Aquatics respond. The incident
you described is horrible. No young people, any people, should be subjected to a paid charter that turns out such as you described. I always thought of Truth Aquatics as the premier charter operation in Southern California.

I'm hoping that Al's experience is an isolated incident for the obvious reasons.

Well we had great times on the Conception with Jerry but trust me, since they can't bother to respond to either the dive shop or my mails, they're off our list for good.

I have had to apologize to all the divers I talked into going with them. My value to them has decreased.

But right now Truth Aquatics has employes working for them that could ruin them.

I'd like to hear how your trip goes. I went on the Vision a few years back and I'd like to do some California diving again (if I can ever fit back into my drysuit) but after Al's experience I don't think I'd do one of the Truth boats. At least not until I've heard they cleaned house and issued an apology.

I'll be sure to post a trip report.

Not to discount Al's experience, but there are usually 2 sides to every story. It is just too bad the Truth Aquatics hasn't responded to his emails. It would have been good to read their side of the story. Their lack of response does make Al's story more plausible.

getting back to the original topic - we just went on our first trip out to California and had a fantastic time. The first day we dove with Peace and second day with Spectre. Both were good but the Peace is definitely a step above - better crew, better food, better boat, nitrox, and all for the same price.
