I am contemplating a trip to So Cal in January to do a live aboard of the Channel Islands. The online websites don't show cruises running at this time. Is this a bad time of year or is it too far out in time for them to finalize a schedule? Ideally, a short trip of 3-5 days would work for my schedule. I would appreciate any insights and tips to help bring this together.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, I am tied up through January. Overall, it seems harder than it should be to find a lob in s. California when I can easily find one in the most remote places on earth.

After the conception fire, I have noticed a decrease in live aboard trips here. Most operators are doing day trips. But the ones doing live aboard trips seems to be organized by private and closed groups.

That being said, live aboard trips here were never as common as other destinations.

December through January tend to be boat maintenance time for SoCal dive boats. As far as multi-days live aboard go, there weren’t that many boats which provide that particular service in the first place. And the selection is even slimmer nowadays. Especially after the Conception Boat tragedy.

My suggestion is take the Catalina Express ferry to Avalon and dive at Casino Point. It’s a great and easy introduction to SoCal diving.

I need to do some overnights on island. Last time I bothered to look was summer prime time and the nightly room rates were obscene.

I’ve never stayed overnight in Avalon so I don’t know how much it costs. However winter time is not tourist time so the hotel rate should be a lot cheaper.

Best things about Casino Point winter diving are: no crowd, calm water, lush kelps, and cool animals that hang out because lack of divers, swimmers and snorkelers.

Pacific torpedo rays sightings, octopus hang out on top of reef…
