Changing Member Names
There are plenty of reasons that a member might want to change their ScubaBoard username:
- They are reconsidering the wisdom of using their actual name in this era of identity theft and the dark web.
- They just came up with a great name.
- They want a name that reflects their personality or interests better.
- They want to divorce themselves from something that just changed in their lives.
- They decide to use their real name for professional reasons. Maybe they are dive pros, writers, or professional photographers.
Step 1: You can now change your username, within limits.
Step 2: Click the Change button opposite your Username.
Step 3a: Start typing your new name. Notice that an error occurs when the name is already taken or is included at the beginning of an existing name.
Step 3b: The error message will disappear when the name is available. You might want to consider this warning message carefully before clicking the Save button. Today is Oct 24, 2021 so that means you must wait a month to change your name again.
If you decide to change your username now you will not be able to again until Nov 23, 2021.
Step 4: Wait for ScubaBoard Staff to approve your new username. This review process is to prevent violations of the Terms of Service agreement.
Step 5: You've got mail and the name change was approved. Enjoy your new "handle".

What if the name I want is already used?
This is where it gets more complicated. ScubaBoard Staff will occasionally accommodate a request to hijack another member's name when:- That member has never posted or been logged onto ScubaBoard in a long time.
- That member hasn't posted very often and not logged in an even long time
- That member is no longer with us, note any Rest in Piece badges.
- The member name has a special history or meaning, like ScubaBoard or NetDoc.
