(sorry - I couldn't resist )

edit: apparently neither could Kevin :rofl3:

This is what I truly don´t get...I might agree that an eloquent insult can almost be a work of art but for the purposes of this board and moderation?

Calling someone an idiot or saying that "someone has their head stuck so far up their rectum that neither gps nor caveline will be enough for them to find their way out"...are both about equally rude to my mind, the fact that one is allowed and the other isn´t just seems silly...if anything, the former has the advantage of being brief and wasting less space (which is what some seemed very concerned about)...if you dislike insults you should be just as incensed about the use of the latter as of the former...otherwise you´re mostly being a stuckup snob, IMO (no offence)...

I totally agree with the first part of your analogy but have to disagree with the stuckup snob part. I don't find cussing particularly offensive but don't do it in public because so many average people do indeed find it offensive. It's not about being a snob, it's just being polite. I know, I know, they're just words but some are more offensive than others.

Therefore, I think it would be wise to keep the profanity out of the main forum areas but allow it elsewhere in some other forums for those of the thicker skinned persuasion. I cuss sometimes but don't do it out in public in consideration of others but if I'm shooting pool in the basement over a few beers with a couple of buddies then that's a different story.

Shooting pool in a basement over a few beers in Indiana? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......that doesnt happen in Indiana. ;)

BTW, I agree with the OP on this issue.

Sometimes we even place bets...but don't tell anybody.

What kind of a guru are you anyway? ;)

Heres a thought, have a rating system for the some of the forums, anyone can get to the "G" threads, make folks get a few posts/some time under their belts before they can do a general opt-in to the "PG" forums, more restrictive and a specific opt-in to get to the "R" rated stuff. People that report too many posts get a "Thinner-skinned" rating and can't get to the "R" rated stuff.

How many levels and how much more work can we expect to demand from SB? Well, there won’t be much more added Mod work if everything goes like some want but looks like there is still large contingent thinking there should be at least some separation between General area and new Opt-In Forum/s.

I ask though that where would us prunes with virgin ears go to discuss if the opt-in areas were free-for-all wild west? I wish to chat too but I don’t want to hear smut and I don’t want to be attacked. I especially dislike the idea of being attacked by a mob who already has an idea what they-all think is right and will do it that way anyway ‘allowed or not’. So there needs to be a clear ruling, so one knows to stay out if not wanted. Will us thin-skinned snobs and momma’s boys be “unfairly” treated and not offered this marvelous free reign to discuss non-diving topics too? How unfair! We’d have to sit trembling on the side-lines because we know all the fun is happening ‘out there’ - but go in and you can expect to be called by your body parts or worse if you say the wrong thing. (See example above, how long it took from my first post in this thread for OP to attack me just for disagreeing). I can choose to not get offended but in most cases I would choose not to participate. I certainly would not participate in cuss competitions.

So SB is making the value choice here, either to offer wider discussion options for those who enjoy it one way or the other way. Can’t have it both because you will exclude or limit one group's freedom or enjoyment one way or another. SB needs to make a decision as to what kind of board it wants to be or continue to be. Also how many layers of moderation can SB reasonably maintain both credibility-wise and practically. At this point I am not even aware how far is the discussion about adding this more of a non-diving/discussion type of area? There was a chat function added some time ago but every time I look that area is empty. How is moderation arranged in there?
