The point is that people call eachother bad things already, just that they cant use the direct words, so they find other ways.. Same ****, different wording..
The insults are still there

OK, one more time for clarification, then I'm out. It is not just the cursing I object to, but the lack of civility. Therefore, no matter what words are used, name-calling of any sort is just not necessary and is mean-spirited, in my opinion.

my only thought about a wild west (besides that i think it's a great idea) is that the threads from there need to show up on 'new posts' as red or green or something. too easy to get interested in a dir thread & give non-dir opinions, for instance, because you did 'new' and just started answering or making your point. just some way to make sure if you're opted in that you're answering there & not on open forum...

I dont think the Bridge and the Wild West are the same.

The Wild West is pretty much....talk about WHATEVER you want..religion, sex, politics, diving,...and be as open and honest as you see fit. Moderation would only occur if personal attacks, threats, etc occur.

Some may think this is just silly and only leads to immature topics/conversations...which it does, but you can actually have very open and direct conversations without the worry of moderation. This can also benefit diving topics..hell whatever.

I dont really see how this is not worth trying out.... as long as the rules are made clear and its password protected. I hope if SB decides to do this they can contact me so it gets started right.

:)

Your subtlety is lost on me here. It was a bad idea then? All the participants were trolls? It was closed improperly? What are you trying to say?
I'm not sure why it was closed, but it was clearly stated from the start that it was experimental and could disappear. I thoroughly enjoyed it :D Maybe NetDoc will share some of his whims and fancies.

Jep makes a point that it was different than a Mild West idea, although it was certainly not strictly diving related.

I like how this place is moderated, although I'm rarely on the receiving end of that moderation. I can understand the situation for those that are just trying to have fun and get moderated, vacationed, or banned, and why they would see a need for a safe haven.

I think a Mild West area would be alright, although I wouldn't want to see it as a free-for-all zone. I don't think it would work if it were a place for people to attack each other, openly or subtly. I think it would work if it were a place for people to hang out as friends and not worry too much about what topics or words they used.

I don't think this thread is about the Surface Interval, but the SI is a good example of the attitude needed to make a Mild West area work. People post as friends in there, even if they are taking jabs and joking around. I post in there and I don't worry about 2 dozen people flaming me because they don't agree with my opinion or they disapprove of my post. For example, there was a discussion about reels a few threads ago- several people threw down their 2 cents about reels- divers with different backgrounds, different training, and different opinions. It was civil and didn't blow up into "My instructor can beat up your instructor." In my opinion, the threads in there much more respectful of differing opinions.

I think the SI forum is the best part of Scubaboard- it's a smaller, more perfect retreat from the big board.

So, by about post #7?

Well, like I am blocked from the DIR forum I dont see why repeat offenders cant be blocked from the Wild West..

I understand your point though, but no matter what you do there will always be someone who cant follow the rules.

And I totally agree. If someone can't follow the rules of a particular forum they shouldn't be allowed, whether it's the SI, DIR, or any other forum.

So if I'm reading this right... If I put up pictures from my next run of rebreather training courses SB is going to delete them because I'm wearing a bikini
Where did you get that idea. One of the ideas proposed earlier was posting copyrighted pics of professional bikini models. Hardly the same thing...

"...but a majority from this thread would at least like an area that afforded them a space free of the normal constraints. I must admit that barring a reasonable objection from the board management citing time, space, or cost implications to the rest of the board, an opt-in only segment of the forum with very limited censoring really would in no way impact anyone other than those who opt in. Why not give those who desire it an area to "be themselves"?"
Are you by any chance familiar with a website on the internet known as 'rec.scuba'?

It is a place where participants may very much "be themselves", and are "free of normal constraints". If you're unfamiliar with it you should check it out.

You are basically endorsing setting up a 'rec.scuba' in a sub-forum of SB.

Those who want an uncensored forum here should visit the real thing first, so they know what they're supporting.

:)
