The term cenote can refer to a cave or a cavern environment. The cenotes on Cozumel are actually more caves and require full cave certification. The cenotes on the mainland have cavern zones which only require open water certification and diving with a full cave instructor/guide.

If you want to do the cenotes, I would recommend the mainland cenotes. Most operators on Cozumel either have cave guides and offer trips over there or have affiliations with cave guides on the mainland and can help you get it set up.

I also highly recommend Dennis of Diable Divers. www.diablodivers.com

I believe there is a sump close to the entry road to Caleta.
This is on private property with a no tresspassing sign I believe. Even though it does have an exit it is a CAVE dive and not a Cenote.

That would be Aerolito, Ron. I don't recall ever seeing a sign there at all.

I agree however, there's not really a 'cavern' zone. At least not one worth diving in comparison to the mainland caverns as Christi mentioned.

I have been interested in the caves of Coz for about 5 years.
I have allways wanted that cave cert....I have worked in confined space underwater and under ice but that does not cut it with the cave agencys.....:(
