Has anyone ever had the CCD sensor replaced on their A series cameras? About a month ago I noticed the display would jump and scramble, similar to a TV when you have a loose connection on the antenna connection. It was annoying at first, then steady got worse.
Three weeks ago just before leaving on a dive trip I turned my camera on and the display didn't come on at all. After making sure I hadn't just turned the display off I tried taking a picture using the viewfinder, but nothing recorded. Finally after powering it on and off a couple of times the display came back, but with the jumping screen. At least it got me through my trip.
When I got back I went to the Canon USA site to get the address of the closest repair facility. I wanted to at least get a quote to see if was worth repairing or if it time for a new camera (and a new housing). When I logged on and entered my camera model I came across the following notice:
Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory
Affected Products:
Digital Cameras: PowerShot A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110
Camcorders: ZR60, ZR65, ZR70,ZR80,ZR85, ZR90, ELURA 40MC, ELURA 50
It has recently come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in Canon digital camera and digital camcorders may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, products exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in connection with this repair.
U.S. residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Support Center for further assistance at 1-800-828-4040. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this issue, and appreciate your understanding in this matter. Thank you for your support and patronage of Canon products.
Great! I did the online forms and recieved an email with a free UPS label. I sent it off last week and today I got this email:
Dear MARC FLL DIVER:
We have received your equipment for evaluation and repair. Based on our initial examination, we will start the necessary repairs at no charge to you. You can expect the repair to be completed and returned back to you within approximately 7 business days* from the date shown above. There is no need to respond to this notice.
Please note that in the unlikely event that any additional internal damage is found due to liquid/water, sand, corrosion, battery leakage or impact (such as dropping the unit), a revised estimate will be sent for your authorization, since these conditions are specifically excluded from warranty coverage.
Thank you for purchasing Canon products and for allowing us this opportunity to serve you.
Best Regards,
Canon Factory Service Center
So they are replacing these for free regardless of age. I'll be able to squeeze another couple of years out of the camera for underwater shots. The only downside is having my wife question why I still need to get a new camera for topside use.
