I'm not a huge fan of GC or Brac, but I loved the 2 dives we did at LC. Given the choice between the 2, I would pick based on how bored I wanted to be topside. There is NOTHING to do on Brac after dark. GC is better but not much better.

I am surprised that you find so little to do after dark on Grand Cayman! There are many restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines and in a wide range of prices - including some truly world class dining or some excellent picnic table dinners at local outdoor stands. Outdoor and waterside dining options are available, there are also dinner cruise and booze cruise offerings, and there are beach barbeques at Rum Point and Macabuca on Mondays. There are also loads of bars for sports fans, craft beer lovers, wine lovers, and more.

There are also a variety of music and live entertainment offerings available and you can usually catch The Barefoot Man's hilarious act a couple of nights a week either in West Bay or on the East End.

You can watch night time tarpon feedings at several restaurants or the frigate bird feeding at dusk at Tukka. You can take a night ride in a submarine, or snorkel in a bioluminescent bay if it is a dark night. Not to mention that you can usually find a night dive every night of the week because there are so many dive ops on GC.

There are also many wonderful opportunities to safely walk on the beach at night to watch the waves and gaze at the stars. Of course there are no casinos in the Caymans but we don't mind that.

What is your definition of Caribbean night life and where have you found more options available then on GC?

Sorry, I did not mean to strike a nerve. I am typically ok with nothing to do but curl up with a good book. : )

IDK, I guess yeah, theres barefoot man, and I DO like going to lonestar, especially if theres live music. I think GC is a great vacay spot, don’t get me wrong – world class scuba, gorgeous beaches, great restaurants… last trip, I took in calico jacks one night – poor service and pretty boring! Haha…

I do like being able to walk around a central downtown / square area and see whats going on, maybe duck into a bar/live music venue, see street vendors, etc. (thinking about Ambergris, Cozumel and Providenciales fish fry)…

I wasn't upset but I was confused. Whenever someone asks about a good place to visit with non-diving family, with both good diving and opportunities for other activities, I always think of GC first - so I was amazed when you said that there is nothing to do.

The first time we went to GC, many years ago, we didn't like it at all! We loved the diving but not the culture. It was too modern and developed and expensive and we're not crazy about all the cruise ship visitors (I have the same complaint about the cruise ships in Cozumel). But the diving was lovely, much better back then - there were forests of black corals that sadly have almost completely disappeared.

We firmly agreed that "we would never go back to GC again!" and we stayed away for some years, but then fate intervened and my husband won free diving for two with the (long gone) Bob Soto Dive Op on GC. It was a bit of a cattle boat but not bad and it was free diving so we sure weren't complaining! Plus the prize included free tanks for shore diving.

That was before shore diving was an established venue on GC with onsite ops, and it was how we learned that there is some great shore diving available on GC. Eden Rock and Devil's Grotto were absolutely gorgeous sites back then, and there wasn't any Macabuca or Cracked Conch Restaurants on the Turtle Reef site - one of the DMs told us about the spot and we did a couple of night dives there that were fabulous!

We liked GC much better after that trip, but it was still not our favorite "too expensive and developed" but some years later we found a great deal for a liveaboard trip on the Cayman Aggressor and so we headed back to Cayman for the third time. We had a great trip and that was how we learned about the Bloody Bay Wall and the lovely sister islands that offers some of the best diving in the Caribbean IMO. We stayed the second week of that trip on GC and that is when we discovered the Turtle Nest Inn in Bodden Town and the opportunity to reduce the expense and distance ourselves from George Town and 7MB - so now we were really starting to like the Caymans.

A few years later and fate intervened again and I was the one to win a dive trip to Cayman that time! Normally we don't win things but we have both won Cayman dive trips which I why I think it was fate! I won an all-expense paid trip for one to the Cayman Brac Beach Resort - we only had to add on meals and diving for my husband and so it was a really cheap trip! We again spent the second week on GC at TNI so a pattern was established.

We loved the CBBR resort and were eager to experience the LCBR. We enjoyed great trips to Bonaire and the T&Cs and St. Croix and other lovely places in between, but we kept getting drawn back to the Caymans. This most recent trip was our 8th visit so I guess we now have to admit that we love the Cayman Islands!

I also think that getting older has been a factor in our changed attitudes. We like the ease of valet diving and the safe environment and the ready availability of good health care facilities - we don't take so many things for granted any longer.

Anyway, I think that Grand Cayman has a lot to offer people of varying tastes so I was surprised when you said that there was practically nothing to do! Sorry for the long saga but it has been a long (and fun) journey!

Out of a week long trip, I will probably go out after dark no more than twice - i liked LoneStar, plus I hear the owner is a fellow Texan (sucks but they did not have tshirts for sale when I was there last). At home, we hardly ever go out now because we live on a lake and everything revolves around watersports.

So… Boddentown – I assume you’ve eaten at Grapetree Café a few times? That place rocks. Did you ever get a chance to try the marlin fajitas @ the long gone Santiagos? I wonder still why they closed down? My 1st two trips there, I stayed @ The long gone Radisson on 7 MB… Not sure what took it’s place, there was a branch of Don Fosters scuba there and they literally rolled a red carpet onto the beach.

Cruiseships? I am glad they leave at 5/6 PM. :D

I remember my 1st few divetrips – Cozumel 90, 91, Grand Cayman 92, 93… I was on a diveboat with 16-20 divers, flying by these slow tiny diveboats thinking, sucks to be you… Little did I know it sucked to be me, they were doing it right. Haha

Yes, we enjoy eating at the GrapeTree, we had some delicious fresh wahoo from there during this trip - the portions were so big that we had a lot left over. Usually left over fish doesn't taste good the next day but it stayed delicious and we used it on salads and sandwiches.

I can't have spicy foods so I stay away from anything with "fajitas" in the name!

We did go to the new Czech Inn in Bodden Town and had a great time. It is a roadside place and nothing to look at but the food was great and it was fun eating outdoors at the picnic tables. Again it was large portions and we had leftovers. They don't serve liquor but you can bring your own and there is a little store right next to it where you can buy a beer or a bottle. The owner (Jiri Zitterbart) was a very interesting guy. He is Czech - no surprise! - and he started his career as a professional hockey player in Europe. Later he studied cooking and he eventually became the head chef at some very pricy places on GC including Morgans and Grand Old House.

Then he decided to go into business for himself and opened up the little roadside place in Bodden Town, see the link below; be sure to check it out the next time you are there!

I don't recall anything spicy in Santiago's foods. I think I went back the 2nd time just for that meal. Won't be a while for us in GC, we're off to cozumel for the 2nd time this year in december and saving our nickels and dimes for Fiji Aggressor for my 50th Bday :D

Wow, be sure and tell us about your trips, especially Fiji!

Spicy is a relative term, I have a sensitivity to the capsaicin in jalapenos, chillis, tabasco, salsa, etc. It's not a true allergy but that's what I tell waiters because they understand the word allergy. It's a different type (non-histamine) response like those people that can't tolerate perfumes. I can't tolerate capsaicin, so even if the food doesn't taste spicy I may react to it, so I generally avoid Mexican, Texmex, Thai, Indian, and other foods are usually include hot peppers. It makes it a bit challenging to visit places like Texas and Mexico!

Drumroll...... we decided to go to Brac this trip! We are incredibly excited! We already booked our roundtrip flights to GCM - now onto the Cayman Air leg of the trip. For the return trip, which is on a Sunday, we can choose between landing at GCM at 9:15am or 11:35am. Our flight to the States takes off from GCM at 1:45pm. Would the 11:35am arriving flight be cutting it too close?

Book the early flight. No question. Gives you some option if there is a problem.

That's what I figured but I'm a pretty risky travel-booker in general so I am always tempted to push it. My vacation companions are very nervous travelers so I should probably be conservative.
