FWIW the problems on the Caribe Dancer have been fixed....but as BDSC has said ...everything is fine until something goes wrong...my friends who were on the boat that week are still waiting on a better response from Aggressor other than free Nitrox on the next trip...talk about throwing them a bone...anyway this thread is about the Cayman Aggressor I would not hesitate to book a trip on this boat. I have been on the CAIV twice and love it Capt Alan runs a tight ship and it is some of the best diving in the Western Caribbean IMO.... go before you can't ;-)

I'm afraid that's going to be a long wait.

No personal experience - but there is just as bad a trip report on the aggressor boat in Fiji as there was on the Carib boat.
Looks like they need to get their stuff together as a company.

I would do the LCBR option.

The Litchfield County Board of Realtors it is!

(That was one of the first things that came up upon Googling LCBR... I assume you were going for Little Cayman Beach Resort? :D)

You would assume correctly! We are going October 27th - November 3rd. I have already booked it for 2013 as well. Really a great place.

Okay I was going to keep quite but I will put my 2 cents in. I was on the Cayman Aggressor earlier this year and the boat and crew were nice enough and the food was excellent, but I was highly disappointed in that we were unable to get over to Little Cayman. And although I realize it was not the crew's fault, I will not be doing that boat again for that reason. Grand Cayman was not that spectacular. If it were my last diving trip for awhile I would seek other alternatives.

However, if you really want a liveaboard, look into the Explorer Ventures company. I have heard really good things about them and when something doesn't go right on a trip, they make it right.

We are doing the Turks & Caicos Explorer next year and I know they have been running some really good deals for the remaining trips this year and I hear the Turks & Caicos is wonderful diving. Here is a link to their company. Explorer Ventures: Adventures in Liveaboard Diving! Click on their "Specials" tab and you may find something that would interest you.

I forgot to add that I would recommend Explorer Ventures in a heartbeat. Great company! And yes, they know how to treat their customers. From the time you book your trip until you get home they are outstanding. I have been on about 5 or 6 six trips with them and 2 of those were to Turks & Caicos. Love their T&C itinerary and the boat itself. I am sure T&C with Exp Vent will be in my log books again.

My son and I did the CAIV April 2011. Nice boat, decent crew, great food, spectacular diving on Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, relatively mediocre diving on Grand Cayman. The crew was very stoked we were making the crossing Sunday night (I didn’t realize there was no guarantee that we would make it over to LC), we found out they hadn’t made t to LC for the prior 3 weeks. My son and I concurred that it was a fantastic trip and diving, and we were very glad we had done it, but it would have been not anywhere near as good if we spent the whole week on Grand Cayman and probably would not do it again due to the risk of not making it to LC (definitely will go land based to Little Cayman Beach Resort one of these years, Bloody Bay Wall was fantastic).

Boat was well maintained, only issue I recall during hte trip was the hot tub stopped working ~2nd day, which wasn’t that big a deal except my son gets chilled and really enjoyed getting in the tub after the 1st two night dives. When we asked (not pestering, just curious) they weren’t all that infomrative about iff or when it might be repaired and didn't come accross as being particularly interested in dealing with it. Not a huge deal, and if it wasn’t repairable at sea I get it, but they had a noticeable attitude the 2 times we asked so we stopped asking, and it didn’t work the rest of the trip.

I had one very minor pre-trip request that they (very begrudgingly) accommodated after a lot of discussion, and there was a snafu picking us up at the airport (Continental changed the flight time which I notifid the office of and they apparently failed to update the crew) which was trivial but the crew bordered on challenging me that I had updated the office at all, instead of a simple sorry (totally no big deal, but they gave us a funny look when we showed up by taxi and they hadn’t expected us yet). They sent out the typical post trip survey and I mentioned those minor issues, and a couple of other very trivial constructive suggestions, never heard another word back. Almost feel like they approach this like they are doing you a favor.

Went with Explorer Ventures this year on the Caribbean Explorer II, office pre-trip and crew throughout the trip really worked hard to try to make sure we had the best trip possible. Much older boat, but crew really worked it; while I would say the CAIV crew also worked very hard, didn’t get quite as much of the warm and fuzzies from them as I did with CEII.

As for the Caribe dancer fiasco, while minor challenges on a liveaboard are somewhat to be expected (in my limited experience), from what I’ve read and seen Aggressor Fleet sending that boat out in that condition, and with the apparent lack of interest in trying to get things in order while on the trip was inappropriate and IMHO inexcusable. While I am not one to rush to boycott a company over a single incident I hear about, the Aggressor Fleet’s response is lame, and a serious mistake given the negative exposure they are getting, and a warning to me to take my business elsewhere. I think I will be focusing on Explorer Ventures options and hopefully a Pacific trip or two over the next few years.

I have stayed at Paradise Resort in Little Cayman and really enjoyed it. At the time- they were partnering with one of the other resorts and we dove with them and that was fine. I did notice that the seas were rough that week- rough enough that no supplies had been shipped in for at least a week- so I am sure the Aggressor was also unable to make the crossing. I would recommend you look at the Little Cayman resorts because that is where the best diving will be in the Caymans.

As for the Aggessor fleet- I have recently been on the Fiji boat and also had a good time and was surprised to read the negative reviews. However, the Carib report is a reminder that sometimes these boats are owned and operated by natives of that country by law and it is not like a typical franchise here is the States where if you go to one store-hotel-etc- you can expect the same level of service from one to the other. Each boat must always be researched on its own.

Hope you have a great time - please be sure to report back on how the trip went :)

I was on the Cayman Aggressor several months ago with Brodydog and have no major complaints about the ship or crew. We had Nitrox, great food and clean accomodations. The diving wasn't the greatest due to weather, we were stuck on Grand Cayman the whole week. The captain(Alan) did his best to give us the most enjoyment out of the hand we were dealt. From what I have read and heard about the Caymans I would not suggest a LOB but instead land based on Little Cayman. Hope whatever you decide it works out for you and you have fun.

Hey all!

Well, with some reluctance I've booked the Cayman Aggressor for October 20-27th. If I wasn't so hung up on two things - doing the Caymans (and the Kittiwake) and doing a liveaboard - I'd have looked elsewhere. Not because I'm worried about the upcoming trip but because I like to exercise the power of the consumer to send a message to companies who don't understand the long-term cost of customer abuse.

My initial concern has been assuaged by the positive experiences reported from the Cayman Aggressor so I'm going in expecting a great week but I will make sure to communicate my thoughts about the Caribe Dancer to the Cayman Aggressor staffers. I know they're different boats but they share the same company name. If one partner is dragging down the reputation of the company then the other partners should know about it.

Here's hoping for the best. I'll share a trip report upon my return. It'll be a trip of milestones for me. My first liveaboard, my first big wreck (the Doc Poulson doesn't count, does it?), my 50th dive (and hopefully my 60th as well), my first time using Nitrox to increase both my bottom time and my safety margin, AND my first time breaking out my AOW card. Oh, and my first time taking my Ikelite housing and Rebel XTi on an ocean dive.

Last one for a while. Gotta make it count!
