Hello all.

Two weeks ago I got back from a trip to Cancun. I didn't bring my dive gear and had not planned on doing any diving, but while I was there I heard about the Cenotes and thought about doing my Cavern cert down there.

Can anyone recommend a good dive shop and/or instructor for a Cavern certifacation in the Cancun area?

Thanks.

We did our cavern class through German Yanez . He is based on Cozumel, but will teach on the mainland. It's about an hour and a half or so south of Cancun to where most of the training cenotes are, though.

I vote for Dennis at Diablo Divers as well.

If you're going to do cavern, I recommend staying further south than Cancun. Consider either Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, or Playa del Carmen. The commute to and from the cenotes from Cancun will be rough.

There are several cenote operators in Cancun (I lived and worked there for two years). It's only a thirty minute drive south to the cenotes where you'll train. BUT, if you decide to choose a specific instructor, you should stay near where the instructor does his training. You can also get exellent cavern instruction on Cozumel island.

I also would echo going with Dennis Weeks at Diablo Divers. Diablo Divers - Home
I have dove with Dennis for two years in a row both on the reefs and in the cenotes. He now owns a dive shop (Aquanauts) at Puerto Aventuras and stages everything from there. He has a great staff and I have done my nitrox, rescue and dive master training with him and his other instructors. I do agree with other posters that staying in Cancun and commuting to the Playa del Carmen area will be a chore. The highway is very good now but it is still a long drive each direction.
