.... DON'T DIVE BEYOND YOUR TRAINING!!!!!
Do you mean don't dive beyond your cert level or don't dive beyond your training? The two aren't the same, and most all AOW divers have zero business diving (air) on single AL80's to 130ft.

I agree. Most of the instructors I know try to work Nitrox and AOW together. They also do their best not to push the limits. The shops I work with tell students that they consider deep to be anything over 60'. After the training is done the only person left to blame for someone diving that deep on an AL80 breathing air is the diver. The dives in AOW were all done between 80' and 90' when I did it and I have always seen the dives done that way. I have no doubt that there are Instructors and students that will push the limits and do something stupid. I think you will find that in every aspect of diving. I believe though that AOW is a good class and the skills can come in handy. If for no other reason than it is a confidence builder I think it is good to take.

If OW instructors are doing there jobs, an OW diver is always at fault for diving beyond his/her limits... whether that be 60' or 130'. AOW doesn't change that.

Experience and mentoring under more experienced divers is a far better method of creating a better diver than a handfull of training dives from what could be a fairly inexperienced diver with an instructor cert.

Very true. You will get no disagreement from me. To make a better diver I believe you are stating the best way. I know OW divers that are very skilled and I would dive with any time. I have also seen instructors take AOW students into Paradise Spring and drop the viz to near zero because both of them had terrible bouyancy skills.
I'm sure we can all tell stories about idiots we've seen that were where they didn't belong no matter what the cert level is. The point I'm making is additional training isn't a bad thing. If you don't have AOW and don't feel you need it then by all means don't go get it. I would be willing to bet that there are some divers out there that don't think they need to go through full cave after they take apprentice. I think they are idiots but I bet they are out there. I think the OW and AOW is the same thing. It is a learning process and if you have done your research and find a good instructor the course is very good at skill building.

I had a dive OP in Ft Laud. nearly refuse to let me no a night dive because I didn't have AOW.

It's not like AOW is worth anything with the majority of instructors out there, I don't see why it's required other than a marketing scam.

I agree. You should be assessed at the start of the course as to how proficient you are at diving in general! I think these prerequisites a a lot of b.....sh......t.!:mooner:

Emphasis mine.

I'm confused, are you suggesting that someone would be better off diving to 130 on an AL80 with Nitrox???

Well I think the chance of getting nitrogen narcosis is less. I don't think anyone needs to be at 130' in a single AL80. I was just simply stating the way the courses are done. I however don't have any issue with someone diving to 130' with doubles filled with Nitrox. I have done it more than once. As long as the diver has planned his dive properly and follows his plan I see no issue with nitrox at that depth.

I would say thats absolutely true. Would you disagree? If so, why?
