I heard the conditions are very poor at Catalina. Too bad, we have plans to be there in a couple weeks. If it is really that bad, I may cancel to go a few weeks later... Can anyone confirm how bad it really is right now?

Depends on where you dive. Casino Pt was 10-12 ft in upper waters last weekend. I heard CDS was getting 40-60 ft at the sites their boat went to. Didn't get a report from SCUBA Luv.

Visibility was also about 10 feet at about 40 feet. That doesn't mean that it won't clear up, though...hope does spring eternal.

Indeed, km, but I hope it springs sooner rather than later.
On the bright side of things, it was quite warm, topside as well as below. And, in some spots at depth (60') viz really wasn't that bad.

It's gotta clear up SOMETIME...............right? But I am looking at my 3 dive boat bookings in October and early November and thinking about cancelling. 10' vis just isn't good enough to bother. At that range, I'll be spending more time keeping my diving buddy in view than seeing anything worthwhile.
This really blows.

I would say that Catalina visibility reports for early September are pretty poor predictors for what the visibility will be in October or November.

But if you would like to sell your spots at healthy discount I might be interested depending on the dates and the boat :-)

The poor viz is due plankton blooms which will dissipate by the time of your trips.

For this weekend that may be another story, but I am sure I will enjoy my trip over to Catalina on Saturday.

Take care

For what it's worth, vis in Big Fisherman's Cove at Two Harbors got up to 10-12 ft along the outer wall of the cove at shallow depths Sunday morning. I've heard reports that are both considerably worse and better. Seems to be a lot of variation from site to site and from day to day.

Hard to project where it's going. One ocean scientist friend who studies ocean temps said the other day that cooling temperatures as fall progresses might tend to perpetuate green water. I'm not sure if I understand the entire premise on that, though.

sounds like i didnt miss much this summer. I got sucked into learning golf and have opted to wait until the water cools off and clears up to dive.

Im a winter diver anyway. Too much traffic going to SD over the summer to bother with diving over the summer. I miss it, but from the posts it has been less than good.

I was just at Catalina two weeks ago and experienced the low vis. my self. I am headded back the end of this month.

I am crossing my fingers for good luck. I will let you know how how it is.

Well, I'm not going to cancel my plans on the 27th. In fact I'm probably going to extend my stay by one day. I've got faith that it's gonna clear up at least enough to make diving worth it.
