My wife and I will be in Orange County Oct 3-9 for a lifetime friend's 50th birthday party. We are hoping to sneak away to Catalina Island mid day October 4 (maybe afternoon shore dive casino point) and do a boat dive with Catalina Divers Supply October 5. There are 2 people on the boat now, we will make another 2, but it takes 6 divers to go out. We are experienced divers, but this will be our first time diving the West Coast.

We would love to see the kelp forest and dive with sea lions. The kelp is easy, sea lions much less predictable. Chartering our own boat is not in the finances for this trip.

So, other than Catalina Divers Supply, are there any other options for boat diving off Catalina? I would like to have a backup plan for a boat dive in place in case the boat doesn't make.

Thanks in advance for your response!

Jay

There are several dive boats on the mainland that go to Catalina for three dives. They are more convenient than taking the Express to Catalina and then having to haul your geat to another boat.

Do you have a preferred company?

Thanks,

True-- but do they run on Thursday's? October 4th is a Thursday and the 5th is a Friday.

Lobster season opens the previous Saturday so there may be boats running mid-week. Most of the local boats have terrible websites, especially where schedules matter.

Sorry guys, I wasn't clear. We will get to Catalina on Thursday, but the boat dive is scheduled for Friday. Our friends live closer to Dana Point and Catalina Express runs one ferry on Thursday at 9:45 am. I think we will take that ferry and maybe do some shore dives Thursday to get our weights dialed in. I've dove my 7mil 4 times, and never in salt water, so I don't want to be the guy on the boat holding everyone up trying to descend. 24-26 pounds just seems like a lot of weight, but I had to swim down 20 until the suit compressed in freshwater.

A few tanks getting used to the Pacific, then to the Hotel Mac Rae, hopefully the boat will make and we will be surrounded by Disney friendly sea lion pups Friday. If not, more shore dives I guess, or go to plan B with the operators listed above. We can cancel the room up until October 1. So far I have not found a mainland based 3 tank dive going out on the 5th, but I haven't made it through the list yet.(on edit- Sundiver is going out on the 5th) I saw one boat that was a 3 1/2 hour ride to the first site....I'm not sure my wife can do that.

Thanks again for the responses, I'll buy you a beer if you want to journey to the island. I'm doing this pretty blind since our friends don't dive, so I really do appreciate the help. If I can intrest you guys in some quality, no vis, catfish infested, perch ear biting Oklahoma lake diving, just let me know!! Oklahoma...where EVERYBODY dives solo, buddy or not!

That sounds like a very good plan to me. Enjoy and let us know how it went.

A few tanks getting used to the Pacific...

Don't worry, the Pacific is just a bit saltier than an Oklahoma lake (and so are the divers!). Enjoy your trip out here

Here is another option for your consideration: this is like the "best of the best" given your timeline.

Thur: Take the 6AM Catalina Express ferry out of Long Beach, make two or three dives at the Park. Have lunch at Desconso Beach Resort (your wife will like this spot), take the 3:50 ferry back. Take a cab from the ferry terminal to the dive park, and from D-beach back to the ferry ($16 each way). The cabs will be waiting when you get off the ferry, walk past the terminal building and you will see them.

The dive kart opens at 8am. by the time you unload your gear and stretch out the kart will be opening. Rent your tanks and weights from the kart. Rent steel tanks if you can. Bring a plastic throw away painters sheet (heavy not the 1ml crap) to spread out on the ground at the park to don and doff your gear on. Rent a few extra weights to hold it down. Toss it when done (I know its being a consumer, but it will be filthy). Pick out one of the benches that rim the casino as your gear spot. The breakfast burritos at the Long Beach Ferry Terminal make a nice snack to eat immediately, or later.

Descanso Beach Club | Catalina Island | Visit Catalina Island

Stay at a hotel in Long Beach: Maya or Aria are good, avoid the Queen Mary. Other choices nearby.

Friday: drive to Ventura Harbor and dive the Spectre:

Dive Trips | The Spectre Dive Boat

They will take you to Annacapa Island: 1 hour short boat ride and great, great diving! Remember to reserve your tanks and weights from the Spectre.

Your only hiccup is Friday night: are you flying back on Sat? Stay around Ventura Fri and head for the airport on Sat.

Here are some reasons I like this schedule. It avoids LA Traffic, and divides the trip up into nice dive-rest-dive segments. Although you have to get up early on Thur. you have a very nice kick back on the Island after diving. You could extend your time on Catalina by coming back on the 6:15 boat, but this will start to feel like a long day. The two hotels I recommended are right across the bay from the ferry terminal, and you can take the water taxi from them to the Pike Ave. restaurants. No driving after your dinner cocktails!

If you only do two dives in the park, you would have time for visiting the brand new Museum or taking the Casino Tour, or just walking the main street in Cat and shopping.. Both are very nice. The Casino is not a gambling place, it was the center of ballroom dancing in the 30's and is very historical. There is also a dive museum at the Casino which may be open too.

If your budget permits, upgrade your ferry ride to the Captains Lounge. Your wife will think you are a shooter. General Boarding seating tip: The farther forward you sit on the ferry the more isolated you are from the engine noise.

In general, boat diving in SoCal is not guided diving. The dive master will give you a very thorough description of the dive sight, but you are expected to navigate to and from the boat on your own.

You can hire a dive guide for the Park, but its not that necessary as you can just follow the point out and back. You can buy the "map" to the park at the kart and it is a nice memento of your trip. Make sure you hit the Sujac wreck, and I hope the Giant Sea Bass are still hanging out there.

Let us know how your trip went!
