I'm interested in doing some Catalina diving in August. I'd like opinions on the various dive outfitters there. Thanks.

Are you talking shore dives at Catalina or boat dives from Catalina or boat dives from L.A.?

I take Sundiver (Express) from Long Beach, CA every time I am in the area and get a chance.

My dive buddy backed out on me the first time I dove in Catalina, and I dove with Tim from Scuba Luv, the rates for the guided dive were very reasonable and included tanks and weights. I feel that they are the best dive shop on the Island:D

I've dived with Scuba Luv, aboard the King Neptune, mainly because they have a compressor and I only schlep one large steel tank when I go to Catalina. The Catalina Divers Supply boat, the ScubaCat, doesn't have a compressor, so you have to use their tanks.

Also, there's some great shore diving at Casino Point. Don't overlook that.

Lastly, HAVE A GREAT TIME THERE!

And, be sure to report back to us how it was.

Second the King Neptune (Scuba Luv). Why? Very large comfortable boat, three dives, and their setup means you don't have to change your rig out (you put your stuff on a tank and they refill that tank).

That said, I also had a great time on the other boat (I think operated by Divers Supply?) when the King Neptune wasn't available.

SCUBA Luv is "my" shop, but both Catalina Divers Supply and Dive Catalina (Ron Moore) can give you a good experience. Scuba Luv's King Neptune offers the advantages of 3 tank dives, a more spacious boat and fills on board. CDS's boat often goes out for two tank dives if you prefer a shorter day and is under new management by my friend Carl Mayhugh. Dive Catalina offers a smaller, more intimate boat and the knowledge of long-time Catalina instructor Ron Moore.
