I just don't log dives
Hi

There was a dive trip I was invited on. My buddy and several of my SoCal homies were taping a training video. I was on the trip to dive.

I did two very un-fulfilling solo dives.

Dive three my buddy was sprung, and we did a CK dive. Hour plus, scooted our faces off, saw some nudis and some other wacky stuff. Had lots o' fun on dive three.

On one my my very un-fulfilling solo dives, I found a Janolus on a kelp leaf. I wanted to get a shot, but everything sucked. So I tore off the leaf and set it aloft.

You've seen my flying Nudis.

You've seen my light table Nudis.

Well, this is my first Flight Table Nudi. I was very shallow (20-ish), it was very bright, so I flung the leaf and waited for it to turn over - so the light shined through. The Sun provided the light for the light table effect, the leaf was flying along with the Nudi - hence Flight table.

We found a McFarlands - lit him up. Man, did he glow. Very cool effect.

We found a Hudson's - he was a phatty. I took some shots of him on the leaf he was groovin' on. The we lit him up... very cool effect.

At the end of dive three Claudette points out this wacky little McFarland's on a near vertical kelp leaf. And he's doing the strangest thing:

* Walk along - stop

* Lift his head

* Lift his tail

* Form a perfect rocking chair position - release

* Slide down the kelp leaf - straighten back out and reclaim purchase

Then he'd repeat this again. Walk along, lift head, lift tail, slide down a bit and then reclaim purchase. It was like he was snowboarding down the kelp leaf.

We watched him do this three times in a row. I watched the first two in complete disbelief, then decided it was a good idea to grab some shots of the third.

I've never seen this before - a Snowboard McFarland's.

Here are some shots below. Mostly art shots of Nudis. If you're a slug hater, hit your back button. If you're a slug junkie like me, here's your fix.

Thanks, Chica. You did great for the video, and you made time for me on dive three - that dive turned my whole day around. You are the best.

Solo diving - found a cool small sponge thing. Have no idea what this is, but it was pretty.

Flight Table Janolus

Closer shot of a Flight Table Janolus - the sun is shining through and that's why he's glowing. The leaf is slowing descending and I'm firing off shots. Both of these images have been flipped, as the Janolus is actually UNDER the kelp leaf on the drop.

Glowing McFarland's

'nuther Glow Bug McFarland's. This time a there is more of Claudette's HID light visible under the kelp

This is a Hudson's shot with all lighting from the top - the Camera's strobes.

This is the same Hudson's shot Light Table style, with Claudette lighting it from below with her Can light. I dial down the intensity of the strobes so you get that glowing Nudi effect.

Same Light Table nudi, with more of Claudette's Can Light illuminating the kelp

Snowboarding McFarlands

Thanks for the kind words.

I've seen those "sponge things" too, Ken, and must admit I neither know what they are nor have spent any time trying to figure them out. Will keep an eye on this thread in case someone does my job for me!

It was the only one I saw. It was under a ledge at Isthmus reed, was about the size of a baseball and was so striking - looking like nothing else, I had to get a shot.

Man, is Isthmus reef loaded with the bad sargassum. That stuff is everywhere on that site.

You know me - I'm a slug junkie. But I love the sponges nearly as much.

I'd love to know what it is. Hopefully not some exotic invasive.

So...what kind of video was Claudette in...hehe.

Spectacular shots as always!!! Can't wait to see your calendars for next year.

it was a reef check training video. Billy and his crew did a kickazz job and got some really clean footage. Its gonna be a great training aid and recruitment tool for sure.

They wisely kept me out of it. It features several of the SoCal RC heros. Its gonna be neat.
