I am taking the day off to Casino Point this Wednesday (August 6) and was wondering what to expect: probably no air fill and tank rental, not much of a crowd, no instabuddy? Or is this business as is usual on a weekend (which I have seen awfully crowded)?

I do enjoy the weekdays, mostly on Thursdays and Fridays.
Not many divers for sure.
But at least during the summer the fill station has been open.
You might give them a call first an check to see.

I don't really need them, diving a rebreather, but it's always good to have, just in case. I'll try to check with them on Monday.
Any Giant Black Seabass sighting lately?

a group said they saw a Giant Black Seabass. My wife and I saw a large school of Barracuda .

The CDS fill station is open all week. I avoid the weekends too (except for topside socializing) and dive mid-week, but almost entirely at night. Day time divers have been seeing GSBs but the sightings appear to have dropped off recently. Perhaps they have paired off and are seeking greater privacy for their matings (although we used to see them paired off in the dive park)! Another possibility is the loss of giant kelp for cover due to warm water and a strong surge a few weeks ago.

Lots of snorkelers, quite a few divers and I did see a GBS!
Thermocline at around 75 ft, but far from chilly anyway.
Boy is this place noisy due to boats motoring in and out of the harbor...

I was there two weekends ago. My first time on Catalina. Amazed at how many divers were there. Interestingly, other than the classes at the buoy, didnt run into any other divers below.

Saw a GSB. Scared the hell out of me as it poked out through the kelp. It backed up into the kelp, only to swim out again a bit behind me. I wish I had a pic of my buddy as he first saw it. He was looking down as it first emerged. As he looked up arms and legs flailed as he tried to back up. Priceless. The thing was huge!

The kelp looked to be in good condition, though I have very little to compare. It was amazing swimming through the forest. Far more beautiful than I expected.

Also saw a couple barracuda, a bunch of grimaldi and large schools of fish. I have been diving in San Diego (wrecks mostly), but never saw this much life. It all made for two fantastic dives

It was 70 at the surface, 66 at 40-70'. I can't wait to go back.

A good deal of noise too from the scooters that the snorklers were using but made navigation a bit easier not that its that hard there either....
