The only reason I go down to SD is that the tech community there seems to be more active than up here in LA. I have found the shallow conditions there consistently worse (viz, surf, current and temperature) than around here.
Try boat trips. It is more expensive than the ferry, but food and fills are included, and you'll get to see lots of diverse sites. The Northern Channel Islands, San Clemente, Santa Barbara, also are worth the longer ride.
