I am considering going over to Catalina on Friday to dive at Casino Point. This will be my first trip over there to do some shore diving.

My question is; what do you do with all of your "surface" gear while you are in the water? I plan on taking a small waterproof case with my keys, c-card, ID, credit cards, cash, etc with me, but what about everything else? What is to prevent someone from walking away with all of your stuff while you are in the water for an hour.

I've been diving here for many years (decades) and never had a problem. However, that said, there are others who have. For $0.75 you can get a locker and keep your valuables there. Unless you are leaving fairly expensive gear out, I don't think you'll have to worry since you'll be taking the real valuables with you.

I bring my wife, she prefers warmer water, and enjoys drawing and reading while I dive. I just have to be careful to give her plenty of attention during the SI, lest Dr. Bill see a potential prospect :)

All kidding aside, that is what I do, my wife gets a peaceful day, I always take her to dinner afterwards, and usually a tour through the shops. While a lot more expense then the lockers, it makes for a nice day for both of us and she'll even fetch me a snack.

Dress warmly. I was there last Labor day. The water was cold, 53 degrees. Coming from TX and use to the Caribbean, 70 degrees is cold. The LDS was a real help since I only brought a 3mm shorty. The lockers ae off to the North around back of the casino. Have fun. I am looking forward to diving there again.

I have wasted $2.25 trying to use the lockers to no avail. Those things just take my money. I always end up leaving my stuff out and thankfully have not had any trouble so far (knock on wood). I was very apprehensive about leaving my wallet and cell phone unattended, but was pleasantly surprised that everything was there after four dives. Nice to know there are honest people still out there.

I get there early an get a huge locker to keep my cell phone and wallet in. Since I'm usually there with a bunch of other ScubaBoarders, I offer the rest of the huge locker to all those who come later.

I've only lost a little bit of money trying to use the lockers, but they really need to get a better mechanism to keep the money from falling through before closing the door and removing the key.

Yeah it took us 10 minutes to find change and after all that, the lockers are rigged to take your money. Most people from what I see, leave their gear out, but usually, the only people over there are divers, because its not very close to anything else.

PS ...Phil, you up for diving soon?

Hmmm... I used to store my tanks in the lockers over Fri or Sat night and don't remember them taking any of MY money. Are you folks using American or Catalina coins? Makes a big difference.

Occasionally we actually get visitors to the island who ask if we accept American money!

Scubanimal- If you'd left your wife alone here just a silly nannosecond longer, I might have swooped. However, I'm finally working on a lady friend of my very "own" who is an avid diver and actually wants to go out with me. This could be a very good summer ('bout time!).
