Hello all,

My main question is: Can I rent a hand truck/cart at the boat docks? I have 2 newly certified kids (13 and 11) and I am the designated pack mule.

If they do not have carts available, what would cab fare be to the park and back w/ 3 sets of gear?

Dr. Bill, or any of you other Catalina locals, please help....

Thanks,
Brett

There is an outfit at the ferry dock that will take your stuff out to the park for a small fee, though some folks feel that they moonlight as testers for Samsonite :mfight:

Anytime you get in a cab in Avalon you will be out $12 a few minutes later. There is a gear storage and transport place by the Express ticket office that might be a slightly better deal. I'm scheduled for Avalon in a little over a week with doubles, kids, kid's gear, etc., etc.

I'll be watching this thread to find the solution - also working on global warming and will post if I figure that one out too.

Wow, better keep you away from my kid, age 12, he's my designated pack mule, lol. I pay he cleans and transports. I've always paid $12 from the Ferry to the point for both of us, I thought it was per car load. I do cut him some slack there, :).

I usually use the gear transport service because not only will they take it over and back, but they also have a fenced storage area where they will keep it for you to pick up prior to your boat departure. I usually stop somewhere for a snack or a drink on my way out of Avalon, so it works for me. The only drawback is timing; they can operate on island time, so factor that in to your plans. It seems to run $6-8 per person; I can never figure out why it varies. They really busted their humps during the Avalon Harbor Underwater Cleanup.

I too use the Baggage for transport and storage. Its not a long walk to the park. Maybe 20-25 minutes. Have the baggage company take your gear and walk over to the park. Then, have them take your gear back when you are done diving. It will be waiting for you when you need to get back on the express.
Carts are also available.

I guess the advantage of going by cab is that you are never separated from your gear. I've rolled/carried everything four or five times and also rented the pushcart from Divers Supply on the pier once, but none of that is any fun, and with the drysuit and doubles its out of the question. At some point you could save another $45 by just swimming to the island. Not worth it.

Here is a picture of my carts.
It makes traveling much easier on the Catalina Express and the baggage co.

Of course I'm hardly the one to respond since I use my hand cart (or my golf cart, the "Dr. Bill Mobile") to transport gear from my home. And don't ask about hotels, because I've only stayed in two in the past 38 years and was recoverying from the night before in both of them.

Others have mentioned the baggage service. I think most people I know with a group of your size opt for the cabs, larger groups for the baggage service.

Those Stanleys make a great dive box...my buddy John has one and we pile all of our gear in it. Easy way to make your carts "all terrain"...go to your local swap meet or Harbor freight and get a set of pneumatic knobbies and a longer shaft. Use your current wheels as spacers. Makes hauling the box over any terrain much easier. We routinely pull it up and down the hill at Marineland (yeah, I like to don my gear close to the water...some people laugh at me and think I'm a dork)

Sorry John, I got to him first :D Maybe you could post a pic of yours??
