I did a bit of a trial packing yesterday and it seems like I'll be under 50lbs with the pony in my checked bag, so I think I'll go that route instead (thanks for the input). I did read the cudgel language and wondered if that would be a problem. While a pony seems like a real lousy weapon, the TSA does love an opportunity to justify their job and I'm kind of allergic to drama.

They seem to like to confiscate items that may be of use to them. If one of the agents is a diver you would have been screwed.

Checked or carry-on follow the TSA requirements for removing the pony valve or you;ll be pony-less on arrival.

I doubt they'd let you carry it on even if you could. Makes too good of a window smasher at 35000'

Typically, no one weighs carry on bags. We did have a situation coming back from Eleuthera. I’m not sure you’d call it a situation but the plane back was small so you had to pink tag your bag since there wasn’t room to stow it in the cabin. They picked up our bag that has our regs and weights in it and were like “this is way too heavy, we’ll have to check this”. It was pretty heavy, lol. It was fine because it was the return trip. We always carry on our regs. This was our first trip with our own weights though. I’d check to see what planes you’ll be on. If you’re the only one handling your bag I’m sure you’ll be fine. Usually if they check your bag at the gate they don’t charge you.

I took a 19cf pony from Philadelphia to West Palm in my carry on about 4-5 years ago on US Airways, just before the American Airlines merger was completed. The valve was off with a simple, removable cap. TSA opened the carry on, asked what it was, did not take a look inside, and sent me on my way. My regulator was in the carry on also. I had a copy of the policy, just in case, didn't need it. I have not travelled with the pony in my carry on since, don't know how it would work out. I'd be interested if others have tried it more recently that I did.

BTW there are new size restrictions which I think are 22 X 14 X 9 which seems to be for all airlines in the US. I could be off on one of the measurements but I remember the "22" because my bag is 24" which used to be OK on most airlines.
I specifically remember that discrepancy when I was shopping eBags and Amazon for my next hardshell carryon. Seeing that some international carriers were different, thankfully I chose the safest route, a 22" bag, with the nifty TSA-approved lock.

Good idea. My last two trips (Florida and Belize), I got the packing down to a science. I have a big "Oceanic" suitcase. I can "fit" most of my gear, and about a weeks worth of clothes (mostly shorts & t-shirts, socks & boxers are easy balled up). Carry-on for some heavy (and delicate) stuff like camera, laptop, GoPro & accessories, and the toiletries satchel. The hard part is the regs (heavy) and fins (almost too long). The big suitcase was 50 to 53lbs., I hate that! Wish they'd just raise the limit to 55 and be strict about it. I might have to carry-on my regs this next trip to Mexico. Makes my backpack a back-breaker, ugh.

Speaking of backpacks, mine will fit under the seat but does require a little effort. And since everyone is so anxious to get off the plane there is not a lot of room to maneuver with my backpack on my back. I have clobbered enough people with it (unknowingly) that now I hand-carry it until I'm off the plane. My apologies to all of you who got clobbered!

I always have my regulator and fins in my carry-on and I'm always way below the 50lb limit on SouthWest but nobody has ever weighed my carry-on, as far as I can remember.

How do you fit fins in a carryon?! They must be shorties, lol. My pack fits easily under the seat, but my regs bag would need to go on top of that so it'll be a squeeze, but doable. I hate having to carry my regs bag separate though, afraid I'll set them down and absent-mind leave them somewhere in the airport, eek! 90% of my gear is Oceanic, but this is the bag, purse size:

I've flown Hawaiian and stated carry-on weight was 25 lbs and within the size restrictions. I've never had them weigh a carry on or check the size. I suppose, as long as it's safe to lift up into the overhead bin, you're fine.
