I wanted it boxed to protect the tank as well as avoid questions and give it a normal surface for them to stick the label on.

A pallet of tanks will probably be handled more carefully than a tank checked on an airplane..

I use 8x8x36 boxes from uline and cut them down to the actual height of the cylinder. I had to order 25 as that is the minimum.

There are lots of reasons to box the cylinder. Ups charges extra for unboxed items, and if the tank is painted it will get beat up from rough handling. If the valve is left on that is vulnerable too. Neither ups nor the airlines accept wired tags so there will be adhesive residue on the cylinder from labels and tape.

Make sure that the valves are removed (TSA Requirement Also) I have a nice DIN Thermo valve that is now only good for decoration after it got dropped during shipping while still in a tank neck.

I put a collar around the valve. Either the center of an old roll of tape or 3-4 wraps of cardboard. The collar supports the weight of the cylinder. Good luck so far, and that is what the places that sell new cylinders do also

You haven't met my ups guy.

He has delivered everything from a RV AC unit to a 140lb clutch flywheel set but every once in a while I'm amazed that I don't get more damaged stuff.
