Capybara and Ted came up to introduce themselves at the Dive Park Saturday (nice to meet you). I saw them at a distance Sunday walking through town. My guess is that the dive trip was cancelled that morning. There was no one at the Dive Park when I checked, although this storm was milder than last weekend's.

kelpmermaid:
I wondered how they fared as well. We wimped out based on the weather reports.
Well... we were out on the Sand Dollar, fri-sat went great at clemente, very good vis (75-100' I'd say at times) .. then the rain came saturday night, 9:30ish we head for catalina....

.... according to the boat captain, it was 16-18' waves, at 7-8 second intervals, you could hear the props go out of the water at times... of the 22 people aboard .. 4 didn't get sick.

Got to Hen rock around 1am, continued to get beat up while anchored.. at 5am decided to call it a weekend and head back to san pedro.

4-6' waves on way in, not the smoothest, but manageable.

Better story than one of our members I just heard from. Their dive boat sank out at Two Harbors the night of the storm. Ouch! Glad I spent the night and next day editing at the computer instead of in the water.

Hi jlyle & kelpmermaid! Thanks for asking about our trip. We went out to Catalina Friday afternoon. We had booked a dive package through scico.com. We stayed at the Pavilion Lodge, which had nice rooms and was right on the main street. We had dinner at El Galleon, which was probably our favorite meal there-steak and prime rib. Saturday morning we headed out early to the Casino Point dive park. We geared up and walked down the stairs into the water-it was easy. Water temp was a comfortable 63, visibility around 50 feet. We swam straight out toward the buoy, and dropped down to 63 ft and headed left along the kelp line. We didn't visit the boat wrecks, but we saw lots of cool fish, including garibaldi, lots of little blue-banded gobys, black-eyed gobys, senoritas, a couple of halibuts, and my favorite, the sheepheads. One was huge! I think it was "Oscar". We saw him right where he is on the Franko's map of the park. He swam up to us, checked us out and swam away. We saw Dr. Bill at the dive park later in the day and introduced ourselves-it was nice to meet you Dr. Bill.

We only did one dive that day because we were meeting some friends to go kayaking. We rented from Descanso Beach Ocean Sports and did a tour with them. We paddled out to Fox Canyon. It was a fun little trip. Big Olaf waffle cones tasted great afterward. But it started to rain later that afternoon and then Sunday our boat trip got cancelled because of high winds. Waves were crashing over the wall at the harbor. We walked over to the dive park to see what it looked like but visibility looked like zero and nobody was out there diving. Monday morning was the same and then we had to leave. So bummed- we really were looking forward to diving with Scuba Luv. But the one dive we did was great and we can't wait to come back some day.

This weekend we're going to try again-going to Point Lobos Friday and boat diving in Monterey on Saturday. Wish us better luck with the weather!

I seemed to see tons of juvenile bluebanded gobies last weekend at Catalina (isthmus area). They're very common -- in fact I think a BBG was the very first fish I saw on my first open water checkout dive a few years ago at Casino Point -- but there sure were a lot of babies right now for some reason.

Capybara- Sorry we couldn't offer better diving conditions! Hope you two enjoy Pt. Lobos this weekend.

Frank O- yes, there are tons of blue banded goby babies this year. Hard to miss them. Also quite a number of baby blacksmith, rock wrasse and others. It seems to be a bumper year.../ baby it's the start of a piscian baby boom!

Hi everyone,

Yup, I was the one with Capybara at Avalon this past weekend, when we met the famed Dr. Bill. Neat! Sorry we missed you Jim, Kelpmermaid and others, perhaps we'll dive together someday in the future. Capybara took this picture of me by the stairs at the dive park. I took the photo of a small halibut we saw near the old pier pilings (he was small, but fast), and of the waterfront during our time that the weather forced us to stay on land. Just as well, judging by the waves, don't you think? All the best from Northern California....
