MASS-Diver:
What did you think about the Port Hunter? I was going to dive her while I was on the Vinyard last summer, but, I wasn't able to. Is she a nice dive?

I have dived it ten times now and I have five good dives and five bad dives. On the good ones I saw about 20-30' visibility, lots of fish (its loaded with fish), I even saw some juvenile tropical fish mostly hidden in crevices (I believe that was late August or early September). The water is also warm relatively speaking it was about 72 on the surface down to about 50’ where there was a thermo cline and it dropped to about 68 (again late August and September). When it was bad I could not see a damn thing and when the surface swells picked up I got bounced all over the place. I won’t mention the time I got the slack tide time wrong :11: .

The wreck is in decent shape it is sitting on its keel leaning to its port side, the bow is in about 30 feet of water, the stern in about 75 feet. She has the port side of her hull exposed and the starboard side is covered by sand. The last time I dove her the decks were still exposed. She is broken in two just about mid-ship. There are a couple of penetration spots they are small and really not worth it. But there is lots of debris to see but watch out for the fishing line.

So yes it is a good dive.

Hey Art:

How's Scargo Lake for a dive? Been there many times as a swimmer or to get the great view from the tower, but never diving. Depth, viz, fish ... what's the deal? Thanks.

Yo, LobstaMan

Scargo Lake is not as good as Hathaways Pond.
Lots of eel grass, haven't explored the whole
lake yet. I usually dive from the launching ramp.
I have many dives logged at Hathaways, it's the
clearest. Looking to dive Long Pond this year
for something different. I have a few night dives
logged at Snake pond from the public beach.
Lots of fish at night. Get with the Aqua Center
in Sandwich for scheduled night dives.

Scargo Lake max depth 48 ft depth , avg 15 ft,
viz is average 10 - 15 ft. at 20 ft. can be murky.
Some fish, but Hathaways is better for fish.

You might want to check out sixponds.org before diving Long Pond. I did my OW dives there back in '87, but last time I checked they were recording E. coli concentrations over 20 times the legal limit for safe swimming water, possibly due to runoff from the newer housing developments.

What is considered the launching ramp? That little sandy/dirt area leading into the water right off 6A? I'd like to try it this year. Maybe I'll find the UFO.

I've always thought about Snake Pond for a dive if STB sucks. Like to dive that this year, too.

UFO?

Some residents claim that back in the 1970's a flying object crashed through the ice on the frozen-over lake and left a hole which didn't refreeze. Supposedly, diver/s went to check it out, but found nothing. That's the Readers' Digest version.... the 'whole' story is on the internet somewhere. Where's Mulder and Scully when you need 'em?

Thanks for the feedback re: Long Pond. It is always a
good idea to check. Very interesting.
