Are there any sites around Monterey where you can reliably find Garibaldi?

I've done a fair bit of California diving now and I still haven't found one.

Any tips for finding them if they're there?

Thanks,

D

The MBA has a few, the last time I was there. Other thank that, you'll have to head down to So. Cal to find the "elusive" garibaldi.

My understanding is that they are pretty well limited to So. Cal, but are prolific there. I haven't had the pleasure of diving Catalina yet, but I look forward to meeting my first Garibaldi. :)

The currents and water temps really change south of Point Conception, so you get a lot of different critters in So. Cal.

what is a garibaldi?

The only Garibaldi I know of is the famous square in Mexico City where the Mariachis play, but somehow, i don't think that is what they are talking about

Never seen one around the Monterey Penninsula.

All the best, James

Dive socal and you will see a ton of them. I've dove both the northern and southern channel islands, and you'll see @ 10 a dive. And since they aren't hunted they are pretty bold around divers.

A garibaldi is one of our two lovely state fishes.
