Would there be any issue using a nozzle like this underwater? What I mean is at the end of a dive while underwater disconnecting my lp inflator hose from my power inflator, attaching this nozzle, and using this nozzle to inflate a SMB...

The issue I'm wondering about is water getting into my tank this way either by the hot swapping of the nozzles or the use of the nozzle itself

short answer: no, you won't get water in your tank.

However, seems like a lot of work to inflate a smb. Other options include orally inflating, using a backup reg, or getting an smb that has a non-locking connector for use directly with your LP inflator hose.

I've seen all kinds of quick shot contraptions but I never understood the problem they were solving. I use an SMB with a duckbill valve bottom and inflate it using the exhaust gas from my primary second stage. It works just fine for me.

This is the nozzle http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41SFfZKO17L.jpg

You have to press it in to be able to get air in. I don't think I can use just a hose, or an octopus to inflate it.

When I inflated it at depth with just my lungs only a couple of feet of it got air in it. If I go for multiple breaths to fill it up it will pull me to the surface before I get it full. LOL

In the world of dive equipment, SMBs are cheap. Get one that works the way you want. I switched a while back to one you just stick the spare reg under and give a squirt. Works great.

why would you want to FILL the SMB at depth??? as it ascends it will continue expanding. this is also why it's a good idea to have it on a spool so it doesn't pull you up.

but no i wouldn't use that nozzle underwater - supposed to used to blow your dust cap dry etc.

my smb just has the oral inflator right now as well... might switch to one with the opening at the bottom.

Might be easier if you buy an SMB that you can inflate with your octo from the bottom and let it go up on a spool if you are trying to inflate at depth. DAN has one that comes with a clip and built in pocket for other safety gear including whistle and signaling mirror for under $100.

I had one of those SMB's and replaced it rather quickly when I realized how easy an SMB with a duckbill inlet was to work with. These can be shot rather easily using your exhaust gas from your primary reg.

SMB and Safety Sausage are not the same thing, one is meant for use from depth, one just at the surface. As for why you would want to use it underwater, there are a variety of reasons, marking position in an area where it isn't safe to surface, or when you are doing a safety stop and will be picked up by a boat, marking a location or sending up a line to haul something up later, etc.

As to the OP, it seems like an overly complex solution to a problem that really doesn't exist, but water won't enter the first stage.
