Thats just crazy

wow...why even ask unless you like to get beat up???

1) as already asked... Are you that good (or that...), that you don't need a reliable dive buddy?
2) you want to risk your Dad's life and pain if anything even small happened?

Why not get him involved in a Intro. type class and join him? Then the liability is on the instructor, not you... and you both can enjoy that bonding time with less stress?

Dive safe and enjoy!!!!!

and my opinion is that its crazy

holy crap!

deep breath

Darwin comes to mind

have him get more insurance---that'll make one of you happy......

RJP:
No problem, as long as BOTH of you are OK having an idiot for a buddy.

As missdirected and almitywife noted, it is the basic scuba forum and has rules about not bashing the under/mis informed. while dwaters did get around to some reasons why it might be a bad idea, he started out with a bash. The rest provided no useful information at all as to why it would be a bad idea, just your harshly worded opinion. Brodie then goes on to complain about missd not valuing his opinion, when the posting 'style' is almost guaranteed to make people dismiss the posts.

Try politely informing and correcting from your vast accumulated knowledge rather than just branding something as 'crazy'.

I agree that if this was a conversation on a boat or at the local watering hole, these comments would not be out of the ordinary. People gathered to have a conversation. I have not read anything hurtful unless provoked by those attempting to take the conversation out of the real world terms of servive for typical society. What would be the remarks towards a comment about diving to 210 Ft with an OW cert? I believe the above comments would all be well placed. The gentleman in question would have a greater chance or incident turning accident than the deep uncertified dive senerio. Apparently these comments are not appropriate unless the gathering had a beer in one hand sitting together at the local watering hole. I believe also that the terminology " keeping it real" that todays youth seem tp enjoy, would be well placed in this forum. I believe I may have an appropriate dive count to make such statements. I live near a dive park and I was NAUI certified this summer as a Basic Diver. My father has always wanted to go SCUBA diving but never has and he just doesn't have the time to take classes. Is there anyway he can obtain a passport or go diving as my buddy without him getting certified?

Get your instructor to take him on a discover scuba. Its a one time dive experience.

My brother inlaw wanted to get certified but was also to busy. He called me and told me he had a "friend" that was going to rent the gear for him and take him diving...told him I'll take care of you.

I told him this was the craziest thing I've ever heard... After going back and forth for 5 mins I said listen chris please don't do this its dangerous and you might likely die please..please..please..don't do it.

He didn't do it and went on to get certified. we talked about it later and he was like... man what was I thinking.

I hope you and your dad get to have that conversation sometime in the future.

It's definitely not advisable. As others have said, there are no "scuba police" and you are free to do what you will.

However, as I'm sure you've learned in OW class, there's a lot of things you can do underwater that can get you seriously hurt or even killed. Scuba instructors go through a lot of training in order to be able to cover all the information a brand new diver needs to know, and while I'm sure you've got a good grasp of the information, you probably don't have enough training or knowledge to be able to teach it effectively. For example, I start IV lines every day, but when I have a brand new paramedic student riding along, and I find myself having to explain how to start an IV, I usually wind up getting all tongue tied...it's a lot harder to teach than it looks! :)

Plus, it's hard to determine how someone will react underwater until they're actually underwater....instructors are trained to deal with a panicking diver and bring them to the surface safely, whereas that really isn't covered in your average OW course.

When I decided I wanted to learn to scuba dive, one of my coworkers offered to take me out a friend's pool and let me use his scuba gear, just to see if it was something I wanted to pursue. My friend is OW certified with a fair amount of experience, but he isn't an instructor. When he explained how to use the BC, I'm sure he explained it correctly, but what I heard was "inflate to go up, and deflate to go down". I was about 10 feet down in the deep end of the pool, and I decided to surface, so I pushed the "up" button, and did a Polaris missile impression! Just by sheer luck, I wasn't holding my breath, as the consequences could have been deadly. Naturally, he freaked out, because he thought he killed me, I freaked out from seeing him freak out, and I did my best to climb out of the water onto his head! Once everyone got calmed down, it was fine, but it could have been a really bad situation. And that was just in a 10 foot deep pool! Things could have been really, really bad had we done that in the lake like we originally planned.

If your dad is interested in scuba diving, you should check your local dive shops or the dive park and see if an instructor is willing to do a "discover scuba" experience. It only takes a couple of hours and allows him to try scuba diving under the watchful eye of an instructor in a confined water or shallow water setting. Many instructors will do it for free or fairly cheap in the hopes that you sign up for OW training. If he likes it, then I'm sure you can schedule classes for him. When I got certified, I had to schedule classes around my 24/48 schedule, so I found a private instructor (not affiliated with a shop) who had a similar schedule, and that worked out well.

Anyways, hope this helps!

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

g'day divers.... again

ive gone thru this thread with a cricket bat to get it back on track and i have deleted a number of posts that was distracting to this topic. as there were so many deletes, if you are missing posts then yours is one i have deleted

once again, let me remind you the rules of Basic Scuba, "This forum has special rules. This forum is intended to be a very friendly, "flame free zone" where divers of any skill level may ask questions about basic scuba topics without fear of being accosted. Please show respect and courtesy at all times. Remember that the inquirer is looking for answers that they can understand. This is a learning zone and consequently, any off-topic or overly harsh responses will be removed."

although Basic is a friendlier forum we welcome open discussion on divng practises but i ask you to remember that newer divers come here seeking advise so lets use the opportunity to guide them to better diving without a slap down

and dont forget the power of a smilie... it can work wonders in getting your humor across ;)

many thanks

I dove uncertified for 8 years. However, that was at a time and in a place where SCUBA instructors were unknown and there were no requirements to dive.

Legally your father may be able to dive IF he can get the gear and tank fill (not legal here in CA for an uncertified dive to get a fill, only the instructor can authorize a shop to fill tanks for their students as I understand it). Is it a wise idea. Not IMHO.

If dad does not have time to take classes - just when is he going to get the time to go diving.

The whole tell dad to grow up!

Give him the classes for his birthday or Christmas...I bet he could find the time if you tell him you are looking forward to the experience. Hope he takes a class and ya'll get to spend many enjoyable hours under water together.
