I have a torn ACL that will be reconstructed next Friday. I have a dive trip to Saba scheduled for early July. I'm one of a group of 4, so I hate to bring everyone else down by canceling (plus, I really want to go). Doc seems more concerned with the carrying of extra weight than the diving itself. If I can scam someone into carrying my gear for me and helping me put my kit on in the water, think I can pull it off? Should I even try?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

i personally would take it easy on the knee and wait until it fully heals before diving.

I've had 5 knee surgeries including acl's on both knees. these days therapy is pretty agressive. I had a clean out and went diving about 6 weeks later worked out good. I would suggest giving the crew/DM a extra tip to help you if you think you might need it.

You have to be agressive in your therapy but I think you'll be fine. you could get your buddies to help to. your doc is right, the before splash down is the only might-be problem, in the water, its great.

Will you be able to swim against a current if need be? What if you lose a fin off of the "good" leg...will you be able to swim well enough with one fin on the post-op leg to get to where you need to go?

What about boarding the ladder in choppy seas?

If you feel its stong enough...go for it.

Where did the term excruciating come from?

your daddy ... when he was explainiung what life was gonna be like after you were born... bbwwahhhhhhahahaha:D

Longest surface interval I've had since learning how to dive was after knee surgery (torn lateral meniscus in my case). Six weeks after the operation I was diving again.

My advice, get on PT as soon as possible, and don't skimp doing what your therapist tells you to do.

I'm currently recovering from an ACL reconstruction from a patella tendon graft 3 weeks ago and surgeon has told me to expect to be out of action for at least 12 weeks.

To be honest given how I'm feeling right now, I doubt I'd be fit enough for diving in 3 weeks time but it's horses for courses.

I am a veteran of several knee surgeries...

I would be most careful not of swimming, but rather of twisting my knee when walking around on a slippery boat deck all geared up. If it were me, I would gear up in the water.

If I were you I would not even think about it. Knees can be tricky - why risk a lengthy recovery if you can avoid it?

Just my opinion
