I think you would be quite happy with the Canon S95. The Recsea housing is a choice definitely worth looking at for the ergonomics and build quality.

Nikon Coolpix P7000 with Fantasea FP7000 housing.. 849$ , you can't go wrong.
It's an excellent package , I just came back from 6 dives with it.

too bad to hear from your flooded camera. since you're a canon-fan i can really recommend you the g-series. at the moment they're i think ~G12. i do use my G10 with an Ikelite housing and an Ikelite DS-160 substrobe. a perfect setup with sweet handling and neutrally buoyant.
if you want to see some pictures you can find them on my site.
all in all it might cost you ~2000$, depending on the strobe you decide to buy (if you want to). otherwise there are also compact housings for the G-series... they give you a good result, too.
