Hi there,

I'm a recent AOW diver, now returning to Boston after 12 years away. I am looking forward to the diving there! Cold water is bracing...

I've done all my SCUBA training and most diving in Northern Cal., which (I am told) should have me ready for diving New England waters just fine. I am looking for a good way to get to know NE diving, and figured to start with a few shore dives.

My question is: are there any regular (as in "every Thurs afternoon") shore dives where one can easily find a (good) buddy and get wet? I want to start diving in early Sept, storms permitting.

Thanks!

Plenty of good folk round these parts, should have no trouble finding a buddy!! Look me in September, but why wait? Also get on NorthAtlanticScuba's website they have regular sunday dives open to everyone.

I should have looked where are you currently located?

also this is a great resource for sites, clubs and shops.

Keep posting here and soon you'll have more buddies than you can ever dive with.

I'll dive with you. But early september is a bit late in the season, don't ya think? It gets pretty cold around here.

Anyway, welcome back. See ya around.

Cape Ann Divers has escorted shore dives every Saturday and Sunday morning, I believe through the end of September. They're designed for people who want to dive, but don't have a buddy, or for people new to the area/diving. You can check out their website for the details. It's a great way to go!

I appreciate all responses.

To answer the question...

I am currently in San Francisco, and do most of my diving in Monterey. Fantastic, year-round diving - never gets colder than 48. When does NE diving go below that? I don't yet dive dry... that has to come after the new job! Even 12 mm of rubber doesn't cut it below 46 or so...

I'll certainly try Cape Ann Divers in Sept, and look forward to posting here as well for a buddy after I arrive.

Thanks again for the information.

Hi,

Diving out here in New England is warm enough for wetsuit diving all the way through the end of October. In fact, Sept and Oct are my personal favorite months to dive because the water is still warm and yet the air temp cools down a bit so that you are not so hot while wearing your thick 7mm wetsuit.

Also, there are some great dive sights in Rhode Island that you might want to check out. The water is noticeably warmer than up in Cape Ann. You can also get a chance to see some jouvenile tropical fish in RI.

Cape Ann Diver's dives on Sat and Sun are a great way to dive when you are new to the area! You can also check out local dive clubs and join them on some of their dives:

Salt water temps right now range between high 60's (surface), maybe 70s, to a bit cooler at depth (depending on how deep you go, of course.) Still wetsuit season, though.
