We will be in Cabo from Feb 23rd to the 27th. We have a delimma on how to plan our trip. We would really like to get up close and personal with the humpback and gray whales since we are going during whale season. Obviously as divers we would much prefer to dive with them. The other option being to take a whale watching excursion out to see them from the boat. I know we have a better chance of getting close on the watching tour but what are the chances of actually diving with them if we tried to just go with a scuba operator? My guess is our chance might be better for a closer look by going with a whale watching company since they would be more mobile and a dive boat stays at a specific dive site. Thoughts and/or experience with this in Cabo recently? This is our first trip and have not been diving anywhere but the Caribbean.
Thanks in advance!

Been there just last week, doing 12 dives. Depending on where you dive, you have a pretty good chance of hearing whales while diving (esp. in the "corridor" dive sites between CSL and San Jose -- Hearing whales while scuba diving :) - YouTube ), but chances of seeing one while diving is next to nil. Our dive guide, who has been diving there for 3 years, has never seen one.

However, you have a good chance of seeing some on the way to or back from a dive site (again, better chances along the "corridor"). Depending on how nice the dive op/captain is, they may take the boat for a detour and stop/chase after a whale when seeing one. Happened twice to us. The second time the detour made the boat run out of gas on the way back to the marina lol

i took those on each of the two occasions we've seen them from the dive boat

its a hit and miss with the whale watch operator too

Thank you for the info, video & pictures! We can't wait! As for our wetsuits... We only have 3/2's so we will need to rent thicker ones!
