JLarg:
After reading on these and other forums for 2 days, I ordered the Triple L Orion. Now I am looking for a reg, octo and gauges. I saw several regs at scubatoys that seemed to be good brands and in the 250 range. Also, what about the inline octo that attaches to your BC inflator? Any suggestions? Thanks again in advance.
Did the $250 include an octo and gauges? In the $250 range, an octo and full gauge set, including a compass, will likely add an additional $200. The inline octos may look streamlined and high tech but present certain problems if they are actually used in an emergency. They are also thought to be of lower performance than a traditional octo, often cost more, and are really a supposed solution to a non existant problem.

No, this did not include octo and gauges. I have seen a reg package at Leisure pro that had reg, octo, and gauge for 399. I think it is a Sherwood package. And, I am going to try my LDS for any specials they may have. This board has really been a big help. It seems like the octo is the way to go, versus the inline stuff.

When you talk to your LDS, ask them if they have any rental gear they are replacing. Usually, shops replace their gear once every year or two. The regs are overhauled and then sold at a really good price.

Hello:
I am also from Texas and my son just got his certification. He is 12 years old. What part of Texas are you located? We are in South Central Texas. We are also interested in purchasing BC's and we are looking at Halcyon's in particular. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks, Tammy

You can get into full packages with gauges for under 300 - but spending a little more gives you a big jump in quality. It's just figuring out what features you want - and how much you want to spend - then get the package that fits your needs and budget.

You may also want to check to see if your LDS can, or will, service the gear you want to buy. If you go with "no name" brands like those mentioned earlier, you may not be able to get them serviced locally. Sending them away for servicing (if you can) can add $$$$ to your initial cost. Also, if you buy from a new and upcoming company, they may have quaility gear, or YOU may be their test dummy. If funding is an issue, maybe you could find used name brand gear at a decent cost.

Very definitely buy gear that can be serivced locally, I dive a Dacor Extreme and I would not trade it away, excellent breathing reg, but no local dive shops officially service this unit. Consider warranty and LDS.
