Deep6 regs are just as reliable cold and deep as all the other choices. There are reasons not to choose them, but not that(maintenance options, availability, etc).

Between all your options and those proposed by all the other posters, the difference in cold and deep reliability is minimal and can't be justified on a cost basis, unless cost is no object.

(watch, someone will make a bad recommendation just to prove me wrong, lol)

I have both trilam and compressed neoprene ( compressed is different than crushed and regular neoprene.) I prefer the diving characteristics Of the neoprene, it a bit warmer and due to the material it distributes the air inside the suit better, it can dive more like a wetsuit I prefer front zip so my front zip is used more often.

just make sure when you buy your drysuit to get a balanced Trigon pee valve:wink:

Why? Honestly curious.

Sealed diaphragm, swivel turret, 5th port, low cost, service kit included along as well as 1st service. Manual posted online, can take their rebuild calss online.

I am a cheap SOB, I just can't find a less expensive reg that checks all those boxes. I've taken them into the Bay in ~ 37F water without any issues. I just can't say enough good things about them.

I do wish they were sold for what they used to be sold for... but I can say that about everything.

Possible reasons:
  • If you live in Europe or some other locations, there are other options that are just as good and just as inexpensive.
  • If you are trying to maintain a relationship with an LDS.
I could maybe come up with a few others, but the idea is that they aren't necessarily the best for everyone, but they are a great choice for many, and cold deep performance isn't the differentiator.

You're right, probably differences in other countries.

As to the LDS ... I would tend to counter that by saying if a shop limits you to what gear you can / should own then they're not really in your best interest.

I should add that I haven't stepped foot in a dive shop in years, so I don't have to deal with that crap.

Ok so, another question now that I have some feedback from several of you on the reg. Knowing that most of my diving is cold water (mid 30s and up) depth up to my current certification level of 130ft, but also understanding that in several years I may progress to deeper.

How would you rank the Z8, M1, and Deep6 signature series?
You need to get out of the mindset that price is a direct indicator of quality when it comes to scuba gear. Much of the price you see is about brand premiums and distribution models.

For example most of the retail price of Atomic and ScubaPro regs comes from the markup at the retail level and the brand premium they can charge in North America.

Zeagle and Mares and Hollis (and most other brands you find in shops) have the same distribution model costs, but can't charge as large of a brand premium. This also applies to ScubaPro in Europe.

Deep6 designs, manufactures (actually outsources the manufacturing to Taiwan, but that reduces costs at their size), and directly sells their own gear, This allows them to undercut the pricing of the other brands at any given quality level.

DGX is a big reseller. I don't believe they make anything, but they do contract for various products under their own name. They can sell these direct to the consumer at a very reasonable price.

Back to the regs. Deep6 is an excellent choice for your current and future diving conditions. Sealed diaphragm regs are inherently well suited for cold and murky conditions. The company was founded by Chris Richardson (@cerich on the site) who had previously designed the regulators for HOG EDGE which are also good choices.

I'm also not a fan of sealed piston regs. Sealed diaphragm are actually sealed, there are 2 rubber diaphragms between the water and the working parts. OTOH, Atomic and ScubaPro piston regulators are sealed by packing grease in the ambient chamber which houses the main spring and the shaft of the piston. If it's not packed completely, you can get unseen corrosion inside the reg.

I recommend this thread for more on the differences: Piston or diaphragm 1st stage ?

If everyone buys everything from the internet, there won't be anyone to fill my tanks. A compressor isn't in my budget yet.

A brand my LDS services might save me money in the long run over Deep6 by mail.
